Emirates has marked 30 years in Australia, celebrating the milestone at Melbourne’s State Library Victoria.

The airline launched its inaugural Melbourne service in June 1996 and has since expanded to Sydney (2000), Perth (2002), Brisbane (2003) and Adelaide (2012). It now operates 70 weekly services across the five gateways, connecting Australians to nearly 140 destinations worldwide and carrying more than 40 million passengers.

“Melbourne is where our Australian story began, and it remains central to everything we do in this market,” Emirates divisional vice president Australasia Barry Brown said. “We have invested in Australian sport, culture and communities, strengthened trade links and created thousands of jobs across the country.”

Emirates launched Melbourne with three weekly services and steadily added capacity. By 2017 it was flying three daily services to the city, and from March 2018 it scheduled all three with the Airbus A380.

After the pandemic, the carrier added a second daily A380 flight in May 2022, providing more than 1,000 seats a day between Dubai and Melbourne.

Emirates has invested more than AU$230 million in Australian sport, culture and community, including partnerships with the Australian Open, Collingwood Football Club and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. It was also a long-standing partner of the Victoria Racing Club, a relationship spanning nearly three decades.

The airline has put AU$150 million into Emirates Wolgan Valley Resort since 2006 and committed a further AU$50 million this year, in partnership with Marriott International, to convert the property into Emirates Wolgan Valley, a Ritz-Carlton Lodge. It is expected to open in early 2027 as the first Ritz-Carlton Lodge in the world.

Australia has regularly been among the first markets to receive Emirates’ latest aircraft and products. Adelaide became the first city in its global network to receive the ultra-long-range A350 in December 2025, while Melbourne was the first Australian city to get the First Class Game Changer suites on a retrofitted Boeing 777 earlier that year.

To mark the milestone, Emirates will serve an Australian-inspired menu on board and in its Australian lounges across all five gateways.
