Brain health has become one of wellness travel’s fastest-growing conversations. Koh Samui’s Kamalaya is answering it with a program that pairs neurofeedback, light therapy and hyperbaric oxygen with centuries-old Eastern healing.

Brain fog. Broken sleep. A mind that won’t switch off. For a growing number of travellers, these are the new symptoms of modern life. Kamalaya, the award-winning wellness sanctuary on Koh Samui, believes it has a program designed to address them.

The Brain Enhancement program is the newest addition to Kamalaya’s Emotional Resilience & Balance stream, sitting alongside Embracing Change, Sacred Renewal and the Wellbeing Sabbatical. It focuses on cognitive function, mental clarity, emotional resilience and overall vitality.

Kamalaya frames the program as preventive and personalised. The idea is to understand how the brain is working before problems appear, rather than waiting for something to go wrong. As group general manager and group director of wellness development Gopal Kumar told Travel Weekly earlier this year: “It’s about understanding your brain before problems appear.”

The timing is right. Brain health has moved well beyond memory loss and ageing. Today the conversation covers concentration, emotional regulation, nervous system balance and cognitive performance. Travellers aren’t just arriving tired. They’re arriving overloaded – by screens, by information and by the relentless pace of their own lives.

Who it’s for

Kamalaya recommends the program for guests looking to prevent memory decline, brain fog and anxiety, reduce inflammation, improve sleep quality and optimise brain function “at the root level”.

That’s a broad church. It takes in the burnt-out executive, the professional noticing their memory isn’t what it was, the entrepreneur who can’t switch off, and the retiree determined to stay sharp.

Guests work with three key specialists – a neurofeedback trainer, a wellness consultant and a Life Enhancement Mentor.

Mapping the brain

Every stay begins with a wellness consultation and a body bio-impedance analysis. The BIA measures hydration, the ratio of body fat to lean muscle and cellular vitality, giving the team a baseline from which to tailor nutrition, exercise and treatment.

Then comes the centrepiece: neurofeedback.

The opening 90-minute session combines EEG brain mapping with neurofeedback therapy. Sensors measure the brain’s electrical activity and map brainwave patterns, identifying imbalances linked to stress, anxiety and cognitive inflexibility.

Subsequent sessions use that map to retrain the brain. The therapy is non-invasive and medication-free and works on the principle of neuroplasticity – the brain’s ability to adapt and rewire itself. Through real-time feedback, the brain learns to self-regulate.

A follow-up EEG session near the end of the stay measures what has changed. For data-driven clients, that before-and-after picture is a genuine point of difference.

The technology

This is where Brain Enhancement moves into new territory for a resort spa. Alongside neurofeedback, the eight-night program includes:

  • Transcranial photobiomodulation – brain light therapy using LEDs to deliver near-infrared light. It’s designed to boost cellular energy, increase blood flow to the brain and reduce inflammation.
  • Neuromodulation therapy – gentle electrical stimulation of the vagus nerve through the outer ear, encouraging the body’s parasympathetic “rest and digest” state. Kamalaya says it can help with anxiety, low mood, migraines and sleep.
  • Brain stimulation therapy – cranial electrotherapy delivered via tiny ear clips, aimed at calming anxiety and resetting sleep cycles.
  • Neuro-Sync sound therapy – a non-touch treatment where guests lie in a zero-gravity position while vibroacoustic sound waves, binaural beats and gamma frequencies resonate through the body, designed to induce deep theta states.
  • Cognitive Renewal IV therapy – a phospholipid infusion intended to support brain function, liver detoxification and cellular repair.

Longer stays go further. From 11 nights, guests add hyperbaric oxygen therapy, breathing 93 to 97 per cent pure oxygen in a pressurised chamber, along with a Neuro Vitality neuropeptide IV. The 15-night program adds an Amino Acid Plus infusion.

Kamalaya’s medical team assesses every guest before HBOT, and the treatment isn’t suitable for anyone with claustrophobia.

Ancient wisdom alongside the science

What stops Brain Enhancement from feeling like a week in a clinic is Kamalaya’s long-held belief that modern science and traditional healing work best together. Neither dominates. Each program includes an initial Traditional Chinese Medicine consultation and treatment, plus a Traditional Thai Therapeutic Treatment.

Hands-on therapies target the nervous system directly:

  • Neuro-lymphatic therapy uses targeted manual techniques to stimulate the brain’s lymphatic and glymphatic systems, supporting the brain’s natural detoxification.
  • Craniosacral therapy uses a gentle touch to rebalance the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.
  • Upper body tension release works deep into the back, neck and shoulders – the areas that bear the brunt of desk-bound life.
  • A traditional Asian foot massage begins with a herbal foot soak heated to around 43 degrees.

Longer programs introduce Shirodhara, the Ayurvedic ritual of warm oil poured in a steady stream across the forehead; an Indian head massage; Kamalaya’s signature Three Treasures treatment, which combines Tui Na, Reiki and crystal healing; a Vital Essence oil massage; and, at 21 nights, Chi Nei Tsang, a Taoist abdominal massage built on the idea of the gut as a “second brain”.

Movement and stillness complete the picture. Guests take part in meditation or pranayama breathwork, and neuroactive fitness training or yoga. Neuroactive fitness combines physical and cognitive exercise to build brain resilience, coordination and motor skills.

It’s a reminder that what’s good for the body is good for the brain.

The setting

Kamalaya is built on a steep, jungle-clad hillside running down to a private beach on Koh Samui’s southern coast. The resort was founded around Arjan Cave, once used by Buddhist monks for meditation, and the cave remains its spiritual heart. Accommodation ranges from hillside rooms to suites and beachfront pool villas, and is booked separately to the program. Lunch and dinner are included, as are return transfers from Samui Airport.

What advisors need to know

Wellness holidays were once the domain of burnt-out executives and retirees in recovery. That’s changing. Clients now want measurable results and a clear sense of what they’re investing in.

Brain Enhancement delivers on both. It’s a high-value, multi-night booking with natural upsell potential – room upgrades, add-on treatments, and pre- or post-stays in Bangkok or elsewhere in Thailand.

A few points to keep in mind:

  • First-time guests must book a minimum three-night wellness program at Kamalaya.
  • Start with a conversation. Kamalaya’s Wellness Guardian consultation helps guests choose the right program before arrival. Not everyone is ready for advanced cognitive work – a client dealing with significant anxiety may be better served by building foundations first.
  • Programs are carefully sequenced. Treatments can be swapped after check-in subject to availability, but cancelled treatments are credited at 80 per cent of the retail price and changes may affect results.
  • Screen for suitability. Claustrophobic clients should avoid the longer programs that include HBOT, and anyone with medical conditions should raise them with Kamalaya before travel.

Kumar’s advice to the trade has always been clear: don’t reserve Kamalaya only for clients in crisis. Send those who are open to growth.

The verdict

The wellness industry has spent years chasing bio hacks and quick fixes. Brain Enhancement takes a more considered path. It combines serious diagnostic technology with the healing traditions Kamalaya has built its name on, and wraps it all in one of Asia’s most tranquil settings.

In a world that rarely switches off, a holiday designed to rest and reboot the brain may be the most valuable trip a client takes.

The real test, as Kamalaya would say, comes after they leave.
