An outboard engine, a Christmas tree and a Starlink satellite internet kit are among the items left behind at Brisbane Airport this year – and all are now up for auction.

Brisbane Airport’s annual Lost Property Auction is live, with thousands of unclaimed and abandoned items bundled into almost 700 lots. Other oddities include a vehicle towbar, a sewing machine and a weed trimmer, some of them bulky belongings that proved overweight or simply impractical to take on an aircraft.

The haul follows a year in which about 25 million passengers travelled through the airport. Many items remain unclaimed well beyond the standard holding period.

There is plenty of more conventional fare as well, including laptops, tablets, gaming consoles, smartwatches, DJI drones, luxury perfumes and jewellery, plus dozens of AirPods. Camping gear, surfboards, bikes, e-scooters, roller skates, a guitar and a pair of new-in-box Ariat boots are also on the list.

Fokker memorabilia

Aviation fans can bid on parts from the Fokker F28 Friendship that was repurposed as the centrepiece of Brisbane Airport’s Fellowship Place. Donated by Aviation Australia, the collectors’ items include the nose cone, pilot’s seat, control yoke, emergency exit, instrument panel and aircraft lights.

VIP packages

Experience packages donated by Brisbane Airport partners include:

  • Brisbane Lions VIP package with a signed 2026 jersey and four VIP tickets with food and beverage
  • Brisbane Broncos VIP package with a signed jersey and sideline tour
  • Brisbane Roar VIP package with a signed jersey and pitch side tour
  • Brisbane Heat VIP package

Competitive bidding is also expected on an exclusive airside tour and one year of free parking at Brisbane Airport.

Sparkly Brain

Adding colour is ‘Sparkly Brain’, a sculpture of approximately two metres by two metres by two metres by Brisbane artist Rachel Burke. The Children’s Hospital Foundation commissioned it for its 10th birthday and donated it to the auction.

Proceeds to charity

All proceeds will go to the Children’s Hospital Foundation, with Lloyds Auctions donating its services.

Brisbane Airport chief executive Gert-Jan de Graaff said: “Every dollar raised through our Lost Property Auction will support the Children’s Hospital Foundation and its work supporting Queensland’s youngest patients receiving hospital care and their families.

“This is one of the country’s most anticipated auctions every year. There are plenty of bargains to be found in time for Christmas, whether it’s a unique piece of jewellery, electronics or something to spark a new hobby.”

Children’s Hospital Foundation chief executive Lyndsey Rice said every bid would help make a difference for sick and injured children and their families.

“What might be a forgotten item for one traveller can become something much more meaningful for a child and family going through an incredibly difficult time,” she said.

Rice said the funds would support research, equipment and programs that improve care for children across Queensland.

Items can be viewed and bids placed at bne.com.au/auction. Bidding runs until 8 November and will conclude with a livestreamed auction. Three young people who have benefited from the Foundation’s work star in the campaign promo.
