Cunard’s Queen Anne will transfer to P&O Cruises in 2029, bringing an unusually short chapter with the historic cruise line to an end.

P&O Cruises has announced that Queen Anne will join its fleet in 2029 following the completion of her 2028/29 World Voyage.

In a related move, Arcadia will complete a special farewell season with P&O Cruises, ending on 21 August 2029, before transferring to Holland America Line.

The move is particularly notable given Queen Anne only joined Cunard in April 2024 following a handover ceremony at the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy.

Her tenure with Cunard will be markedly shorter than that of her fellow Queens. Queen Mary 2 entered service in 2004 and Queen Victoria in 2007, while Queen Elizabeth joined the fleet in 2010.

Carnival UK, P&O Cruises and Cunard president Paul Ludlow said the decision followed a review of where the individual strengths of each ship would best fit within the group’s brands.

“These decisions reflect a careful, long-term view of our portfolio and where the individual strengths of each ship can best support guest demand and the future direction of our two cruise lines,” Ludlow said.

Designed as a ‘bold and contemporary’ expression of Cunard

Ludlow pointed to Queen Anne‘s more contemporary design as one of the reasons the ship was a natural fit for P&O Cruises.

“Queen Anne was created as a bold and contemporary expression of Cunard, combining the brand’s hallmark service and sense of occasion with modern design, an extensive choice of dining and entertainment, and highly flexible public spaces.

“Those qualities give her a natural affinity with the modern P&O Cruises holiday experience. Following her reimagining, she will introduce a new class of ship to the P&O Cruises fleet and broaden the choice available to guests through a different scale, style of onboard experience and range of itineraries.

“This choice will complement the existing fleet and make her a defining addition to the next chapter of P&O Cruises.”

Queen Anne will continue sailing for Cunard through the completion of her 2028/29 World Voyage before undergoing an extensive reimagining and receiving a new name ahead of entering service with P&O Cruises in May 2029.

Queen Anne still set for historic Four Queens celebration

Before leaving Cunard, Queen Anne will play a prominent role in the line’s Four Queens celebration in Liverpool in May 2028.

She will then embark on her final World Voyage for Cunard during the northern winter of 2028/29, with further details of celebrations marking her farewell season to be announced.

Meanwhile, Cunard is also preparing for a major upgrade of its flagship, Queen Mary 2.

“Next year we will also complete a major upgrade of Cunard’s flagship Queen Mary 2,” Ludlow said.

“As the world’s only ocean liner providing regular transatlantic service, it’s a one-of-a-kind asset, and our investment is designed to ensure it continues to delight guests for decades to come.”

All currently published voyages scheduled before the respective ship transfer dates will operate as planned.
