Aurora Expeditions will open its 2026-27 Antarctic season on 24 October, when the Sylvia Earle departs Ushuaia for the Antarctic Peninsula – the first of 27 voyages to seven regions.
The Australian-owned operator will run the program across three ships, the Greg Mortimer, Sylvia Earle and Douglas Mawson, through to 29 March 2027. Groups are capped at 130 expeditioners per polar departure.
Month-by-month guide
Aurora has also published a month-by-month guide to help agents and clients match timing to experience.
October and November are pitched at photographers, with temperatures ranging from -10°C to 0°C, heavy pack ice, fresh snow, nesting penguins and elephant seal pups. It is also the only window for camping, snowshoeing and ski touring. The feature itinerary is a 22-day Falklands, South Georgia and Antarctic Peninsula voyage departing 24 October.

December and January are the warmest stretch, at around 1°C in December and 0°C in January, with 20-plus hours of daylight and the busiest penguin colonies. Aurora recommends booking 12 to 18 months ahead for the peak period. Antarctica Complete (Christmas and New Year) runs 23 days from 17 December.

February and March are best for whale watching, with temperatures from -5.5°C to 1°C. Humpback, minke and fin whales and orcas are drawn by krill, and pack ice slowly reforms. The 13-day Spirit of Antarctica: Whale Migration departs 13 March 2027.

Aurora’s global head of product, Justin Ewin, said the season’s breadth lets travellers “choose the experience that best matches what they most want to see and do”.
Six special edition expeditions cover photography, activities, science and women-only travel. The Ross Sea Odyssey is the local departure, leaving Hobart on 14 December 2026.
Eighteen scientists across five research projects will also join voyages, studying whale health, penguin populations and the colossal squid.
