CHESTER, Pa. – A late start didn’t seem to bother the Saint Mark’s soccer team. The Spartans controlled the action for nearly all 80 minutes in 1 3-0 win over Caravel on Sept. 29 under the bright lights at Subaru Park in Chester, Pa., home of the Philadelphia Union of Major League Soccer.

The Buccaneers and Spartans were scheduled for an 8 p.m. start, but an accident on Interstate 95 northbound snarled rush-hour traffic. That pushed the first game of the evening, Conrad vs. St. Georges, back by a half our, so the second game did not get under way until almost 8:30.

Saint Mark’s came out playing an aggressive style on the professional-sized pitch, but the Bucs stuck with them for a bit. Caravel sent several shots wide of the Spartans’ net, and the shots on net were stopped by keeper Tom Swasey.

Good defense helped lead to the first Spartans goal in the 30^th minute. After a steal, Scott McDermott moved the ball toward midfield and sent a long pass ahead to Brayden Wrinn, He got around a defender to the left of Buccaneers keeper Logan Brown and sent a shot into the short side of the net.

Caravel had two corner kicks late in the first half, but they could not convert. One a shot on goal in the final minutes of the half, Swasey booted the ball to Brady McMann, who went in all alone on Brown and drilled a shot into the left side of the net to double their advantage.

The offensive chances dwindled a bit in the second half, but the Spartans were able to add one more goal. That came in the 50^th minute off a corner kick. Nick Cirillo inserted the ball along the goal line, and Declan O’Connor saw it in the crowded 6-yard box and rolled it in with the Commodore Barry Bridge looming overhead.

The margin allowed both coaches to get every player on the respective rosters the opportunity to play on the same field as Andre Blake and Cavan Sullivan.

The Spartans improved to 4-1 and will host Archmere on Friday at 3:45 p.m. Caravel (1-4) travels to Brandywine on Thursday at 6 p.m.
