Industry identity Richard Taylor has launched Talent for Travel, a talent marketplace that showcases available travel industry professionals to employers, rather than advertising vacancies.

Taylor said the platform, in what he says is a travel industry first, is aimed at the gaps left by both job boards and traditional recruitment.

“This is not jobs. This is people,” he told Travel Weekly.

A former director of Membership and Industry Affairs at ATIA and with previous experience at TIME (Travel Industry Mentor Experience), Taylor said generic job platforms offer limited categories, which makes niche travel roles hard to place, and listings are visible only for the period an employer pays for. He cited a Canberra agency that received more than 500 applications for one role, none of them suitable. Recruiters, he said, can miss candidates whose skills would transfer from another role or sector.

The marketplace is a curated snapshot of people registered with Talent for Travel, covering all experience levels and salary ranges, including a section for senior executives. Employers can browse the profiles and request introductions.

The model is consent-based. Featured candidates have agreed to be listed and know how they are presented. Taylor said he seeks a candidate’s approval before any introduction is made and currently employed candidates control whether their details are shared. He said one of the aims is to avoid situations where candidates learn mid-interview that the employer is their former boss. And there will be no “head-hunting” as such, knowing retention at small businesses is difficult enough. But if they are at a large company “if someone applies for a role or tells me that they’re looking for one, I think that’s completely fair game”.

‘Shop window for brilliance’

Taylor described the marketplace as “a shop window for brilliance” that reduces the role luck plays in matching people with travel jobs.

“Employers can now discover people they may never have found through a traditional job ad,” he said.

Featured profiles will rotate monthly and be promoted on social media. Taylor said the platform could suit experienced professionals, new entrants, people returning to the industry and those affected by redundancies, with transferable skills such as management, marketing, sales and customer service a key focus. He even spoke to a bus driver looking for a career change at a recent travel course graduation ceremony.

But this is only the first phase, Taylor said. Talent for Travel is also developing a searchable database that would let participating employers search by skills, location and other criteria, with candidates deciding who sees their information. Taylor said how employer access will work is still to be determined.

He also plans to split recruitment services into three pricing levels, unbundling tasks such as advertising roles, producing shortlists and running full searches. He said that is “coming soon”, but not part of the initial launch. While the Talent for Travel platform launched in May, Taylor said he has already placed people in roles.

While the idea has been brewing for some time, Taylor said the concept has only come to fruition in the past couple of months and the future of it was still unclear.

“Regardless of what happens, I’ve already helped people with their career, and that’s rewarding each and every time,” he said. “So that’s a positive.

“I don’t have to take over the universe. If I can just make that happen and tick things over and help people, then I will be all the better for it, and I can grow from there.”
