The Colca Valley in Arequipa will host an international group of high-end travel specialists later this month, as REMOTE Expedition Peru gets under way.

From October 27–30, 27 travel designers from 11 countries will meet 26 Peruvian exhibitors – 21 independent lodges, boats and trains, and five destination management companies – for three days of business meetings, immersive experiences and discussions on responsible tourism.

The designers come from Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Hong Kong, Luxembourg, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland, the UK and the US.

The event, held in partnership with Peru’s Commission for the Promotion of Export and Tourism (PROMPERÚ), is the first edition of REMOTE Expedition. It was launched to mark 10 years of REMOTE Latin America. Peru was chosen for its geographic, cultural and gastronomic diversity and its appeal for experiential and high-end travel.

Unlike a traditional trade show, the format brings a carefully selected group together to focus on one country at a time.

Before the Colca meetings, the designers will join one of five pre-trips from October 23–27, each led by a local partner: Amazonas Explorer, Andean, Coltur Peru, Explorandes and Tropic Travel. The itineraries will cover lesser-known destinations.

REMOTE Latin America founder and executive director Roberto Bitelman said the event was intended to be “about more than connecting buyers and suppliers”.

“By bringing together a carefully selected group of leaders who believe in the value of small-scale, responsible tourism, we are creating a space where business opportunities and bigger conversations can happen side by side,” he said.

PROMPERÚ executive president Teresa Mera said hosting the event was an opportunity to strengthen Peru’s presence in the high-end segment and foster partnerships that benefit local communities.

Cultural depth

The Colca program pairs scheduled one-on-one meetings with outdoor, cultural and wellness activities, plus evening discussions called REMOTE Circles. Facilitated by Peruvian-born strategic designer Da Sánchez Suárez and inspired by Andean ideas of community and reciprocity, the Circles will explore responsible growth and long-term relationships with destinations. Colca Lodge will be the base.

REMOTE Latin America partner and commercial director Marcelo Pontes said Peru offered “independent businesses, strong local knowledge and cultural depth”, and the aim was to connect that with the right international designers.

On sustainability, the organisers are working with Colca Lodge to cut resource use, waste and single-use items. They are also measuring calculable event emissions for compensation, in partnership with ECOAN – Asociación Ecosistemas Andinos. The funds will ultimately support high-Andean forest restoration in the Vilcanota Mountain Range in Cusco, together with the community of Abra Málaga.
