Cairns is positioning itself as an international rugby hub, with teams from across Australia and the Pacific drawn to the region’s direct flights, sports infrastructure and leisure offering.
The Cairns Airport team have joined members of the local Fijian community to highlight Cairns’ potential as an international rugby hub.
This year’s Fiji Airways Rugby 7’s tournament has attracted growing interest from men’s and women’s teams, boosting Tropical North Queensland’s potential as a year-round destination for competitions and training.
The upcoming Fiji Airways Cairns Rugby 7’s tournament will be held on October 30 and 31 at Stan Williams Park.
“Cairns is an ideal location, because of direct services with Fiji Airways and Air Niugini, and it gives visiting teams the opportunity to extend their stay and experience Tropical North Queensland,” Fiji Community Association FNQ president Ili Cava said. “There is a great opportunity for Cairns to develop as an international gateway for teams to train, compete and visit.”
The venue has recently received a boost, with a $12 million upgrade of Stan Williams Park completed last year, delivering a new grandstand and modern amenities. A second phase of refurbishments is in the pipeline.
“Major sporting competitions like Fiji Airways Rugby 7’s help to showcase our region as a world-class events and business hub, as well as an idyllic holiday destination,” Cairns Airport chief executive officer Richard Barker said. “Direct services with Fiji Airways and Air Niugini make Cairns a natural northern gateway to Australia from the Pacific, while their broader route networks provide valuable connections from a range of global markets.”
The tournament is an initiative of the Fiji Community Association FNQ.
Beyond rugby, the tournament will feature family-friendly activities and DJ entertainment across the two days.
