Silversea has officially opened The Cormorant at 55 South, a 150-room hotel in Puerto Williams, Chile – the southernmost city in the world – as the new starting point for its Antarctica Fly Cruise program.

The hotel opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on November 5, attended by Silversea executives, Chilean national and regional authorities and local community members. It was developed with a consortium of Chilean investors and is described as a first for both Silversea and Royal Caribbean Group.

All Antarctica Fly Cruise guests will now fly non-stop from Silversea’s private terminal in Santiago to Puerto Williams on Silversea-branded charter flights, staying at The Cormorant before and after their voyage.

Silversea president Bert Hernandez said the hotel was built “to make the journey to Antarctica easier and more comfortable for our guests.”

Each of the 150 rooms was built using modular construction in Mendoza, Argentina, then transported across the Andes and Patagonia. The hotel is staffed by teams trained in The Silversea Way, the brand’s service culture.

Onsite offerings

  • Latitude 55, a restaurant serving family-style Chilean Patagonian dishes
  • Bar Sur, with a Chilean wine list, calafate-and-Pisco cocktails, guided Pisco journeys and sommelier-led tastings
  • A fireplace lounge overlooking the Patagonian landscape
  • Three works by Chilean artists – Paola Vezzani, Cata Flaño and Javier Canales
  • Guided kayaking on the Beagle Channel, hiking at Seno Lauta and horseback riding

Travel Weekly will be reporting from The Cormorant in the coming weeks.
