Global aviation services provider dnata has launched operations at Western Sydney International Airport (WSI), with major investments in cargo, catering and passenger hospitality facilities underway.
The company supported the airport’s inaugural domestic passenger flight on 25 October with inflight catering services, before providing ground handling for its first international flight on 26 October.
The launch marks the beginning of a significant expansion for dnata in Western Sydney, including a $32 million cargo terminal, a new catering facility and the airport’s first international passenger lounge.
$32 million cargo investment
dnata is investing approximately $32 million in a purpose-built cargo terminal within WSI’s 24-hour Cargo Precinct.
The 5,000 sqm facility, expected to open in December, will have the capacity to handle up to 60,000 tonnes of cargo annually once fully operational.
It will feature specialised infrastructure for temperature-sensitive shipments and is expected to create around 50 direct jobs in its initial phase.
“The opening of Western Sydney International marks an exciting new chapter for Australian aviation, and we’re incredibly proud to have played a part in it from day one,” dnata Airport Operations Australia managing director Burt Sigsworth said.
“We’re building a long-term presence at WSI, investing in the infrastructure, technology and people needed to support its future growth.”
New catering centre and international lounge
dnata is also developing a 3,250 sqm inflight catering facility, scheduled to begin operations in 2027.
The centre will be capable of producing up to three million meals annually and is expected to create more than 200 direct jobs over the next decade.
Until the facility opens, dnata will service airlines operating at WSI from its existing catering centre at Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport.
Meanwhile, the company will operate The Rayleigh Lounge, WSI’s first international passenger lounge, which is expected to welcome eligible travellers in November.
Located in the international terminal, the lounge will feature locally sourced ingredients and a menu inspired by Western Sydney’s diverse food culture.
“There’s something special about being part of an airport’s very first passenger flights,” dnata Catering & Retail regional CEO for Australia and Southeast Asia Gareth Rees said.
“Our new catering facility represents a significant investment in the region and our future capabilities.”
The expansion builds on dnata’s existing Australian operations, which employ approximately 8,000 people nationwide.
The company currently supports more than 107,000 aircraft movements and handles around 300,000 tonnes of cargo annually, while its catering division produces more than 54 million meals each year.
