Australian travel agents are being invited to explore Nepal’s remote Upper Mustang region this December, as the country looks to tourism to support local communities following devastating floods in August.

Nepal-based Community Homestay Network (CHN) has reopened applications for its 12-day Upper Mustang: A Trans-Himalayan Community Experience fam trip, running from 5 to 16 December 2026.

The trip is aimed at Australian agents specialising in immersive, sustainable and culturally focused travel, with applications closing on 30 October.

Ground arrangements are covered, although agents will need to pay for their own flights. Places are limited.

The itinerary takes agents off the beaten track into one of Nepal’s most remote regions, travelling along ancient trade routes through dramatic Himalayan landscapes, traditional villages and the medieval walled city of Lo Manthang.

Highlights include exploring the Sky Caves of Chhoser, meeting local families in Narchyang and Kagbeni, and visiting Lubra, one of Nepal’s last active Bon communities, where traditions predating Buddhism remain alive.

The journey also includes time in Kathmandu and Pokhara, with community homestays, cultural experiences, yoga and sound healing along the way.

Open for business

CHN founder Shiva Dhakal said the fam was an opportunity to remind the Australian travel trade that Nepal is open for business and local communities need visitors.

“Travelling with Community Homestay Network means seeing a different side of Nepal, in a way that supports and empowers local people in lesser-known parts of the country,” Dhakal said.

“We already know Aussie travellers love this style of tourism, so we’re excited to open their minds to a new region of the country.”

Dhakal added that improved air connectivity through Asian hubs, including Singapore, Bangkok and Hong Kong, was making Nepal more accessible to Australian travellers.

The fam comes as CHN expands its trade offering, introducing its first guaranteed fixed-departure trips for agents to sell.

Eight immersive, multi-day itineraries are now available, with more than 100 departures bookable through December 2027.

Agents can sell CHN experiences directly, with the Nepal-based team providing local expertise, logistical support and insights into the communities featured on each itinerary.

Applications for the December fam close on 30 October 2026. Agents can apply here.
