The Catalan Tourist Board has listed down five must-see locations in its capital city of Barcelona during the autumn season.

October and November bring cooler temperatures, fewer visitors and some of Catalonia’s most colourful landscapes.

The five featured locations are La Fageda d’en Jordà, Bellmunt del Priorat, Sant Llorenç de Montgai, Boí and Santa Fe del Montseny. Experiences include walks through volcanic forests, vineyard trails, mountain villages, lakes and protected natural areas. The featured destinations can be added to a Barcelona itinerary as day trips or short extensions.

1. La Fageda d’en Jordà

The beech forest grows over an ancient lava flow created by the Croscat volcano, within La Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park. By late October, pale trunks rise above a carpet of copper leaves.

Families can take the flat, circular Joan Maragall Trail, which takes about 35 minutes. More active visitors can tackle an 11-kilometre route linking the forest with the Santa Margarida and Croscat volcanoes – a circuit of about four hours and 20 minutes. Horse-drawn carriage rides are also available.

2. Bellmunt del Priorat

Priorat vineyards change colour after harvest, with leaves turning yellow, orange and deep red across the terraced hillsides. The colours contrast with llicorella, the dark slate soil closely associated with Priorat wines.

Walkers can follow a six-kilometre path between El Masroig and Bellmunt, a moderate route of around two hours. Cyclists can ride an easy 19-kilometre circuit connecting Falset, Bellmunt and Marçà in about 90 minutes. Visitors can also book winery tastings or tour Bellmunt’s former lead mine.

3. Sant Llorenç de Montgai

Golden poplars reflect in the reservoir beneath the reddish cliffs of the Pre-Pyrenees. The area forms part of the protected Aiguabarreig Segre–Noguera Pallaresa natural area.

A mostly flat circular walk around the reservoir takes about two and a half hours. Birdwatching, kayaking and the historic Tren dels Llacs offer other ways to experience the landscape.

4. Boí

Autumn arrives early in the Vall de Boí, where villagers gather pumpkins from small vegetable gardens overlooked by stone houses and steep Pyrenean slopes. The board recommends October for the best atmosphere.

Visitors can combine the experience with walks between historic villages, visits to the valley’s Romanesque churches or an excursion into Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park.

5. Santa Fe del Montseny

Less than two hours from Barcelona, Santa Fe Lake offers one of the most recognisable autumn landscapes near the city. From late October, the beech forest turns copper, gold and orange around the water.

An easy circular walk leads through the forest and around the lake. More active visitors can continue along the Empedrat de Morou route, climbing through dense woodland to rocky viewpoints over the Santa Fe valley.
