Australian travellers heading to France are being urged to exercise a high degree of caution following large-scale protests and demonstrations across the country on 17 October.
Smartraveller said further protests may occur and authorities could introduce public safety measures – including partial and localised curfews – in some locations. Travellers are advised to follow the instructions of local authorities, stay informed and steer clear of demonstrations and areas with a heavy police presence.
The advisory also notes France is operating at ‘vigilance renforcée’ (enhanced vigilance), the middle level of its three-tier alert system for responding to security and public safety threats.
Smartraveller also reminded travellers they may need a visa for the Schengen area, depending on the purpose and length of their trip. Travellers should check the European Entry/Exit System (EES) and visa requirements before departure, and delays at border crossings are possible.
Dual nationals of a European country should check whether the EES applies to them and which passport they should use to enter.
