Here is everything you need to know about Hobart Airport (HBA), the main airport of Tasmania providing connections all over the mainland and a seasonal international route to Auckland, New Zealand.

Located approximately 17km from Hobart CBD. The terminal operates from 4am to 10.30pm but adjusts arrivals and departures of flights when necessary. The airport is unable to accommodate overnight stays for travellers but there is accommodation nearby.

Getting to and from Hobart Airport

Bus. SkyBus provides airport transfers via the Hobart Express service with tickets available online or at the ticketing booth.

Taxi. There is a taxi rank located directly in front of the terminal building. Travellers needing a mini-van or special taxi can ask assistance from the attendants on duty.

Private vehicles. There are multiple parking options for travellers bringing their own vehicles or picking up loved ones.

Hire cars. Hobart airport offers a choice of over 10 car rental companies with several located inside the arrival area.

Parking options

Premium Car Park offers undercover convenience and security. You can rest easy knowing that your vehicle is protected from the weather and just a few minutes’ walk to the terminal.

Short-term car park. This car park is located just a few minutes’ walk from the terminal and provides the perfect option for day trips, weekend getaways, or business events.

Long-term car park. The cost-effective solution to secure vehicles on trip for five or more days and is just 650m away from the terminal.

Saver car park. A suitable car park for stays lasting one to four days with affordable rates for budget conscious travellers.

Drive-up parking. The self-parking option allows travellers to use their credit card at entry and exit without the need to take a ticket.

Valet car park. Travellers can simply drop off their keys and let the valet team do the rest. Vehicles will be waiting upon their return.

Facilities at the terminals

Shopping. There are a few shops at Hobart Airport where travellers can find unique souvenirs, apparel, travel accessories, gift items, books, and basic medicinal and personal hygiene items. As part of the upgrade we’re expanding our retail offering, we’ve launched Relay news and Purely Tasmania. A chemist is due to open in Arrivals later this year.

Dining. Restaurants and cafes in the airport include the Coal River Farm Café and Bar, York St bar, Café Outbound and Marketplace. As part of the upgrade it is expanding our Food & Beverage offerings While some outlets are temporary during construction we have a range of options throughout the terminal to satisfy travellers.

Bicycle assembly point. There is a bicycle service station outside the arrival area that allows travellers to assemble, disassemble, inflate tyres and undertake minor maintenance on their bikes.

Water refill stations. Travellers can refill their water bottles at the refill stations across the terminal. There are multiple locations in arrivals and departures.

Arrival Procedures

International travellers need to complete an incoming passenger card to clear the Australian Border Force and Department of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Forestry (DAFF) checkpoints.

They must then present their passport and visa (if applicable), along with any documents for children if travelling with any.

Biosecurity Tasmania – When disembarking an aircraft at Hobart Airport, you will be asked to dispose of or declare any goods that are not permitted in Tasmania. These items should be placed in the biosecurity bins located inside the terminal building. You will be greeted by a friendly Biosecurity Tasmania officer and detector dog who will inspect all hand and checked luggage.

Departure Procedures

Check in. The check-in desks are located in the middle of the terminal building.

Oversized baggage. Travellers with oversized luggage can ask the airport staff at check-in to assist them.

Security clearance. Both international and domestic travellers need to undergo standard security screening before departing. Additionally, international travellers must pass through international security screening as well.

Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS)

Visitors to the country can claim a refund on goods and services tax (GST) and wine equilisation tax (WET) that they have paid on certain good during their stay. It is open to all overseas travellers and Australian residents. There are certain conditions to claim the refund:

• Spend $300 or more (including GST)
• Goods must be purchased no more than 60 days before departing Australia
• Goods must be paid by the traveller themself
• They must have an original tax invoice for the goods
• Wear or carry the goods on board as hand luggage (unless they are liquids, gels or aerosols or oversized or bulky goods which must be checked-in) and present them along with your tax invoice, passport and boarding pass to a Tourist Refund Scheme desk prior to departing.
