Vietjet has signed an agreement with SpaceX’s Starlink to offer free, high-speed inflight Wi-Fi on its domestic and international flights, including services linking Australia and Vietnam.

The deal was signed during Vietnamese General Secretary and President To Lam’s working visit to the United States.

In the first phase, Starlink will be installed on 120 aircraft – 100 Airbus A321 and Boeing 737 jets, and 20 Airbus A330s. Vietjet also plans to fit all future aircraft deliveries with the technology.

Starlink is designed to provide coverage over oceans, polar regions and remote areas. Vietjet said it wants inflight internet to be an everyday service rather than a premium amenity.

“With Starlink, time in the air no longer has to mean time offline. Vietjet passengers will be able to stay connected throughout their journey,” Vietjet chairwoman Dr Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao said.

SpaceX senior vice president of global business and government affairs Tim Hughes said the rollout would build on Starlink’s existing service to homes and businesses in Vietnam.

The airline described the agreement as the start of a long-term technology relationship with SpaceX.
