InterContinental Brisbane will begin a staged, multi-million-dollar renovation in October 2026, with works running until late 2027 and the hotel trading throughout.

The 319-room IHG property, housed in the Harry Seidler-designed building on Queen Street Mall, will grow to 324 rooms on completion.

Woods Bagot, the firm behind the redesigns of InterContinental Sydney and InterContinental Sydney Coogee Beach, is leading the design. The project centres on the hotel’s grand atrium, which will be reworked so all 324 rooms have a view down to a reimagined atrium footprint.

Guestrooms, suites and meeting and event spaces will be progressively refurbished with a palette of warm neutrals, natural stone, marble and dark timber, along with mid-century-style furnishings.

Level 6 will house a new concierge gallery, including an upgraded arrival area, lobby and reception. Club InterContinental will also relocate there, with views over Queen Street Mall and the Edward Street luxury precinct.

New food and beverage offerings include an Argentinian grill restaurant, an Italian pasta and wine bar and a reimagined lobby bar. The hotel will also introduce a new gym, spa and wellness offering, plus a reimagined pool deck.

Integrity maintained

Woods Bagot principal Tracey Wiles said the design aims to keep faith with the building’s original integrity while adding “warmth, lightness and a sense of ease” through Brisbane’s subtropical character.

General manager Shaun Parsons said the hotel is positioning itself to welcome guests for the 2027 Rugby World Cup and the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

“This transformation marks a defining new chapter for InterContinental Brisbane and will set a new benchmark for luxury hospitality in the city,” Parsons said.

IFM Investors head of development, real estate, Tom Waters said the company has invested in the Seidler-designed building for more than two decades.

“As a long-term pension capital investor, our focus is on how we can enhance our assets to make them attractive destinations and fit for purpose not just now, but well into the future,” he said.
