Thousands of flights across the US faced delays and cancellations on Monday after a telecommunications outage disrupted major airports in New York, Boston and Philadelphia.

Flight-tracking website FlightAware recorded around 7,000 delays and cancellations across the US. These included more than 1,400 flights at New York’s three major airports.

The disruption coincided with the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where around 130 world leaders were gathering.

What caused the US flight disruption?

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) temporarily halted incoming flights at several major airports. These included John F. Kennedy International Airport, LaGuardia, Newark Liberty International Airport, Philadelphia and Boston.

Air traffic controllers also diverted more than 100 flights to other airports.

US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy initially blamed an Amtrak construction crew for the outage.

However, NJ Transit subsequently confirmed that a crew working on its Delco Lead project in New Jersey had accidentally cut a fibre-optic cable.

NJ Transit said the crew had been working approximately 10 feet from utility markings at the site. The agency is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said a primary communications circuit had failed at Philadelphia Terminal Radar Approach Control. The facility manages air traffic across the region.

Authorities later discovered that the backup fibre-optic cable had also been severed, leaving the facility without its usual communications systems.

Philadelphia International Airport also halted incoming flights. Meanwhile, Washington’s Reagan National Airport temporarily stopped flights for more than an hour due to air traffic volume issues.

When did flights resume?

The disruption lasted approximately eight hours before crews repaired the damaged telecommunications lines.

Duffy confirmed late on Monday that airport operations across the US Northeast were resuming.

However, passengers continued to face delays as airlines worked to clear the backlog.

The incident comes amid ongoing concerns about the ageing US air traffic control system, which has experienced several significant telecommunications outages in recent years.
