Virgin Australia has launched a new Travel Media Network, giving brands access to the airline’s almost 21 million annual customers across digital, lounge, in-flight and experiential channels.

News Australia’s content agency Suddenly has been appointed to manage advertising sales for the network, offering brands a new way to connect with Virgin Australia customers throughout their travel journey. Suddenly is part of News’s suite of commercial content brands, which also includes Medium Rare, Storyation and Visual Domain.

The network will reach more than 300,000 lounge visitors a month across seven major city airports, where guests spend an average of 70 minutes’ dwell time. Beyond the lounges, it will extend to the Virgin Australia website and app – which reach more than three million visitors monthly – with in-flight Wi-Fi sponsorships and targeted emails to launch soon.

The announcement comes after Virgin Australia was named Australia’s most trusted travel and tourism brand for the fourth consecutive year by Roy Morgan last week.

Virgin Australia chief marketing and sustainability officer Libby Minogue said the launch created a new opportunity for brands to connect with customers through some of the airline’s most valuable touchpoints.

“Virgin Australia has a unique relationship with millions of Australians, and our Travel Media Network will give brands new ways to be part of the customer journey in relevant and engaging environments,” Minogue said.

“Importantly, it’s about creating value on both sides by giving brands access to our audiences in new and meaningful ways, while enhancing the experiences we create for our customers and guests.

“Suddenly’s deep understanding of content, audience and commercial outcomes made them the right partner to take this proposition to market.”

Experiential opportunities

Brands will also be able to activate experiential opportunities across Virgin Australia lounges as part of the network, including pop-up brand experiences, sampling hubs and integration into landmark cultural moments such as the airline’s celebration flights.

Suddenly retail media director Jennifer Stokes said the network gave brands a rare, uncluttered environment with an engaged audience.

“For brands that want to reach a premium audience at scale, this network is a compelling addition to any media plan,” Stokes said. “Our work on this network is a powerful example of the strategic consultancy Suddenly provides, helping brands commercialise their reach and build sustainable owned media networks that deliver long-term value.”

The announcement was made at the travel session of Beyond’27, News Australia’s five-session intelligence series bringing together the country’s leading marketers for category-specific insights and commercial solutions.

Virgin Australia’s Katya Abramzon will lead the Travel Media Network under an expanded remit that also includes the airline’s retail, revenue growth and partnerships marketing division. Media network expert and former McKinsey consultant Scott Moore led the establishment of the network from its initial development through to launch, laying the foundations for its commercial proposition – he will depart the airline now that Suddenly has taken over managing ad sales.
