There are currently delays averaging nearly 90 minutes at Miami International Airport after an Amazon cargo plane overshot the runway and landed on a road. 

Five people were killed, and five more injured, after an Amazon Prime cargo plane travelling from Puerto Rico overshot the runway, hitting cars and later catching fire.

The accident happened at around 2pm local time, Sunday evening. All flights were cancelled for a few hours, but are now running with delays.

Miami Dade Aviation confirmed it was an Amazon Prime plane. According to local fire officials some of the victims became trapped inside their vehicles. At least three of the injured are in critical condition.

Significant delays 

Secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, told travellers to expect “significant delays” if they are traveling through the area.

FlightAware has warned that current delays currently stand at around 84 minutes. A number of domestic flights, from destinations including Austin, Baltimore and Birmingham have been cancelled.

One of MIA’s four runways reopened at 16:15 with a second opening 30 minutes later. No planes were permitted to depart until 17:30.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the Boeing 767-300 cargo aircraft left from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico. It is currently investigating the incident.

Amazon said it was “heartbroken” to learn about the crash.

“Our deepest sympathies go out to the families, loved ones, and all those affected by this devastating loss,” Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel said.
