Adelaide Airport will overhaul its self-service check-in and bag drop offering under a new agreement with Amadeus, in a move designed to empower travellers and cut queues.

Australia’s fifth-busiest airport will install more than 50 Amadeus Seamless Bag Drop S7 Air and S7 Air Hybrid units, which can run in full self-service or agent-staffed modes. The units feature a side-loading design intended to make it easier to load bags and manoeuvre large items such as wheelchairs, strollers and trolleys.

These will be paired with around 80 Amadeus Seamless Kiosks, aimed at delivering a faster, smoother self-service check-in experience.

As part of the upgrade, Adelaide Airport will also shift its passenger processing technology to the cloud via Amadeus’s Airport Cloud Use Service (ACUS). The system will let airlines operate from any check-in or boarding counter and access the systems they need remotely, freeing the airport from fixed network connections and opening the door to passenger services from new locations around the departure hall or via roaming agents.

Adelaide Airport executive general manager of people, culture and customer Dermot O’Neill said the shift went beyond a straightforward technology refresh. “Moving to Amadeus’s solutions for seamless travel helps us maximise the productive use of terminal space, onboard new airline partners more easily and deliver a more connected experience for passengers,” he said.

Amadeus Asia-Pacific senior vice president of airports and border authorities Jonathan Tong said the deal would give the airport a flexible foundation for future passenger services. “Adelaide Airport provides critical domestic and growing international connectivity to South Australia,” he said. “We’re excited about transforming the airport experience in Adelaide and continuing to make travel work better across the end-to-end journey for travellers.”

The airport will also adopt Amadeus Smart Message, a new system for exchanging data between airlines and its baggage infrastructure, replacing Teletype – a decades-old messaging standard dating to the 1960s that remains widely used across aviation.
