LATAM Airlines announced it will invest over US$25 million (approximately AU$34.8 million) to introduce multi-orbit satellite connectivity services on more than 60 new Airbus and Embraer aircraft.

The carrier aims to enhance the passenger experience through fast, reliable internet connectivity with broad coverage.

The new technology will enable passengers to access the internet during their flight, regardless of the aircraft’s route or location. This will be made possible through access to satellites operating in different orbits, helping provide more consistent coverage throughout operations. LATAM will equip the technology on more than 60 Airbus A320neo, A321XLR and Embraer E195-E2 aircraft.

“At LATAM, we are committed to making every journey more connected,” LATAM Airlines Group vice president of customer experience Paulo Miranda said. “By introducing next-generation multi-orbit connectivity across a larger portion of our fleet, we will provide our passengers with a fast and reliable onboard internet experience, helping them stay connected wherever they fly, while continuing to raise the standard of travel across Latin America.”

LATAM currently operates a fleet of more than 250 aircraft equipped with wi-fi.

LATAM Pass members will be able to access onboard wi-fi free of charge, expanding one of the benefits offered by the program throughout the travel experience.

The announcement comes shortly after the airline secured a US$505 million (approximately AU$700 million) loan to purchase 11 new aircraft.
