JR Central and JR West have confirmed 1 October 2026 as the launch date for Supreme Class, a new private-cabin tier that will sit above the Green Car on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen – the bullet train corridor linking Tokyo with Nagoya, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima and Fukuoka.

The move is being pitched as the biggest shift in the line’s onboard hierarchy in decades. It’s the first time since 2003, when the double-decker 100 series was retired from the Tokaido line, that the Shinkansen has offered passengers a lockable private room.

Two cabin types, one new class

Supreme Class Cabin will be fitted to 16-car N700S trainsets in two configurations:

  • Car No. 10: a single-seat cabin for one guest
  • Car No. 7: a two-seat cabin for up to two guests, with a sofa for travelling companions

Both are enclosed private rooms with an electronic-lock door that opens and locks automatically using the same QR ticket or IC card used to board – no separate key or code required.

Inside, guests get a reclining seat with leg rest, lumbar support and seat heater, all controlled via an in-cabin tablet, along with four preset lighting-and-climate “scenes” (Normal, Business, Relaxation, Sleep).

Other fit-out details include a dedicated 5G-capable Wi-Fi network, a headrest speaker using NTT’s Personalised Sound Zone technology so audio doesn’t carry to neighbouring cabins, a large table, Type-A and Type-C charging, a hanger and a table ornament sourced from regions along the route. Luggage space fits a carry-on-sized suitcase (55cm x 40cm x 25cm); provisions for oversized baggage are still to be confirmed. Seats in both cabin types are fixed and don’t rotate.

Onboard, Supreme Class guests receive a welcome drink and confectionary, plus access to exclusive items through a mobile order service, letting passengers shop without leaving the cabin.

Rollout and fares

The class starts small: about 12 trains a day from October, rising to around 30 by the end of the current fiscal year, with JR Central targeting Supreme Class on roughly 30 per cent of all Tokaido Shinkansen services by the end of fiscal 2028. The first service is Nozomi No. 1, departing Tokyo at 6am on 1 October.

Sample one-way adult fares for Nozomi services in regular season (basic fare plus limited express surcharge included):

Route Car 7 cabin (up to two guests) Car 10 cabin (one guest)
Tokyo–Nagoya ¥47,060 (~AU$414) ¥32,660 (~AU$287)
Tokyo–Shin-Osaka ¥60,790 (~AU$535) ¥42,390 (~AU$373)
Tokyo–Okayama ¥74,440 (~AU$655) ¥51,840 (~AU$456)
Tokyo–Hiroshima ¥86,620 (~AU$762) ¥60,020 (~AU$528)
Shin-Osaka–Hakata ¥72,690 (~AU$640) ¥50,090 (~AU$441)

Fares dip by ¥200 in the off-peak season and rise by ¥200 in peak season and ¥400 in super-peak season. A second guest booking the Car 7 cabin needs their own valid ticket for the same train, in any seat class; children six and under travel free.

Bookings open at 5:30am on 15 September 2026 through the Tokaido Sanyo Shinkansen Online Reservation Service (Smart EX) and Express Reservation, with tickets released one month ahead of travel from 10am daily thereafter.

What’s next

JR Central is also developing a semi-private Supreme Class Seat, now scheduled for fiscal 2027 (April 2027 to March 2028). It pairs a large back-shell seat with its own electronic-lock door between the aisle and the seat, and – unlike the fixed Cabin seats – can rotate so two guests can sit facing each other.

For agents, the pitch is straightforward: Mount Fuji views and Shinkansen punctuality have long made the Tokaido line a drawcard for inbound visitors, and Supreme Class gives high-yield clients a first-class-style option that didn’t previously exist on the route.
