Washington, Nov. 08 (SANA) A painting by American artist Georgia O’Keeffe, missing for nearly 40 years, has been discovered hidden beneath fur coats in a New York apartment closet. The artwork is estimated to be worth $3 million.
CBS News reported Friday that the painting was found by the niece of its late owner, known as Betsy, while sorting through the apartment’s belongings. The discovery brought to light a work that had remained out of sight since the 1980s.
The former owner had received the painting as a graduation gift from her mother, who bought it in 1963 for $3,800. The owner later concealed it in the closet because she feared it might attract unwanted attention.
Titled “Near Abiquiu, New Mexico,” the painting depicts the state’s rolling hills in an abstract style. It bears O’Keeffe’s signature, while a doodle by her husband, photographer Alfred Stieglitz, appears on the original box.
The painting is expected to be offered at auction, with the proceeds designated to support an educational institution and assist family members.
O’Keeffe (1887–1986) was among the most prominent American artists of the 20th century. She was known for works inspired by nature, flowers and desert landscapes, and her paintings continue to draw interest in the international art market.
