Virgin Australia has added hot chips to its inflight Economy menu, in what it believes is an Australian airline first, following months of testing to perfect the snack at 35,000 feet.

The crispy hot chips, served with aioli dipping sauce, will be available to purchase on eligible flights as part of the airline’s refreshed buy-on-board menu.

They will join the TikTok-inspired Cheeseburger Toastie, which is returning after Virgin Australia sold more than 50,000 since its launch in May 2026.

According to the airline, getting hot chips to remain crispy at altitude required months of testing and adjustments to the cooking process.

Virgin Australia chief customer officer Andrew Cleary said the addition reflected the airline’s efforts to bring popular food trends onboard.

“Hot chips are a great example, with no Australian airline believed to have served them onboard before. It’s taken months of testing to get them hot and crispy in the air,” Cleary said.

“They’re also the perfect match for our Cheeseburger Toastie, which we launched a few months ago and have already sold more than 50,000 of.”

The refreshed Economy menu also features a Chicken Caesar wrap inspired by the viral social media trend, matcha lattes, chai lattes, BOSS Iced Latte Coffee and a Jose Cuervo Sparkling Margarita.

Business Class menu gets a refresh

Virgin Australia has also unveiled new Business Class breakfast, lunch and dinner options, available from 11 November.

The updated menu includes an egg and cheese breakfast quesadilla, seared beef with roasted vegetables, potato and rosemary jus, and stir-fried beef in black bean sauce with rice and Asian greens.

The dishes were developed following guest feedback and taste testing, with all Business Class food and beverages included in the fare.

Economy passengers will continue to receive complimentary tea, coffee and water, while Velocity Frequent Flyer members can redeem points for eligible onboard food and beverage purchases.

“We’re continuing to innovate with what we serve in the sky, bringing new and exciting food and drink options onboard to make flying with Virgin Australia even more enjoyable for our guests,” Cleary said.
