Carnival reveals final Australian voyages for Adventure and Luminosa ahead of 2028 exit

Carnival Cruise Line has unveiled the final Australian departures for Carnival Adventure and Carnival Luminosa, with both ships set to leave local waters permanently in March 2028 amid ongoing concerns over Australia’s cruise competitiveness.

The cruise line has revealed a series of repositioning voyages taking passengers from Sydney to Asia and North America, with bookings opening later this week.

The announcement follows Carnival’s decision to withdraw both vessels from Australia, citing the need for greater regulatory certainty and more competitive operating conditions.

Carnival Adventure to sail via Asia

Carnival Adventure will depart Sydney on 20 March 2028 for a 19-day voyage to Tokyo, visiting Papua New Guinea, Hong Kong, Taipei and Japan.

The ship will then operate an eight-day roundtrip sailing from Tokyo on 8 April, calling at Busan in South Korea and destinations near Mount Fuji.

Its final repositioning leg will be a 15-day transpacific voyage from Tokyo to Seattle, departing 16 April 2028.

Meanwhile, Carnival Luminosa will leave Sydney on 15 March 2028 for a 23-day voyage to Los Angeles, travelling via Hawaii and French Polynesia.

Australia’s cruise industry under pressure

The departures mark a significant reduction in Carnival’s Australian operations. Both vessels had previously been expected to split their time between Australia and North America before the cruise line confirmed neither would return.

The decision has raised concerns across the industry about Australia’s ability to compete for cruise ship deployments, with Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) warning that rising costs and regulatory uncertainty are driving ships elsewhere.

Despite the withdrawals, Carnival Cruise Line assistant vice president Anton Loeb said Australian travellers still had time to experience both vessels.

“With Carnival Adventure and Carnival Luminosa continuing to sail in Australia through to March 2028, guests and travel agents still have an extensive range of itineraries to choose from across our four ships over the next 17 months,” Loeb said.

The repositioning voyages will go on sale later this week via Carnival Cruise Line.
