Australian travellers heading overseas can now obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP) at Sydney Airport in as little as one hour before departure, thanks to a new partnership between Travelex and the NRMA.

In an Australian airport first, travellers planning to drive abroad can apply for and collect an IDP at Travelex’s Sydney Airport location, allowing them to organise their overseas driving documents and foreign currency in one stop.

The partnership also enables Australians to apply for an IDP online and collect it from participating Travelex stores across NSW and the ACT, with approved locations offering same-day issuance.

IDPs are recognised in more than 150 countries and are required or recommended for Australian motorists driving in certain overseas destinations. Issued under the authority of the Australian Automobile Association (AAA), permits are valid for 12 months and must be carried alongside a valid Australian driver licence.

The launch comes amid growing demand for travel to popular overseas destinations, with Travelex reporting an 80 per cent increase in Indonesian rupiah sales in the first quarter of 2026 compared with the same period last year. Japanese yen and Thai baht sales also rose by 30 per cent and 10 per cent respectively.

Travelex managing director for Australia and New Zealand, Asokan Sathurayar, said the partnership would simplify travel preparations.

“With more Australians travelling to destinations where an IDP is required, we’re proud to help meet this growing demand through our extensive retail network,” he said.

“Our exclusive benefits will also enable NRMA members to make their travel money go further – whether they choose cash or a prepaid Travelex Money Card.”

As part of the agreement, NRMA’s 3.5 million members will receive exclusive foreign exchange offers through Travelex, including preferential in-store exchange rates.

NRMA chief membership officer Victoria Doige said the airport service would be particularly valuable for travellers needing permits at short notice.

“The same-day IDP offered at the Travelex at Sydney International Airport makes it even more convenient for those who need an IDP at short notice,” she said.

“An International Driving Permit is an essential travel document for many international destinations, with some authorities and car rental companies requiring an IDP to drive on local roads.”

Same-day permits can be processed in as little as one hour, depending on the time and day of application.
