VisitOSLO has revived its reluctant tourism ambassador Halfdan in “It’s Totally Even a City” – a Christmas horror musical designed to sell Oslo as a winter destination.

The film has attracted more than 5 million organic views in its first week online, according to the tourism body.

It follows the 2024 campaign “Is It Even a City?”, in which Halfdan, a deadpan Oslo resident, told viewers “I wouldn’t come here, to be honest”, while wandering the city’s attractions. VisitOSLO says the reverse-psychology approach drew more than 25 million organic views across platforms.

This time Halfdan gives his honest opinion of winter, which runs from November to March and is traditionally Oslo’s low season.

“Audiences have been asking for more Halfdan, so it felt right to bring him back. His view of Oslo is as gloomy as ever, but this time we see the city in a different season,” VisitOSLO head of communications and marketing Thea Gunnes said.

Gunnes said the aim was to show Oslo is a fantastic winter destination “while keeping the humour, understatement and affection for the city that so many people loved in the first film”.

The sequel was again created by Oslo agency NewsLab and directed by August Jorfald. NewsLab managing director Linn Isaksen said the team did not want to simply remake the original with a winter backdrop, and that a musical was “one of the funniest things we could do”.

Whether Halfdan’s feelings have softened is revealed in the song.

VisitOSLO is pitching winter activities including museums, festive lights, cosy cafés, floating fjord saunas, winter swimming, and cross-country skiing and sledging in snow-covered forests. It has also published Halfdan’s Winter Guide to Oslo on its website.

The campaign has been covered by Ad Age and Monocle radio.
