Italy is seeing visitors spread across more months and more destinations, with nine of the country’s 15 fastest-growing emerging destinations in the south, according to a new report.

The Data Appeal Company/Almaviva Group’s annual All Italian Data report, based on its Mabrian Travel Intelligence Platform, identifies five trends shaping Italian tourism in the 12 months to August 2026.

Air capacity

Total air capacity to Italy rose 5.1 per cent year on year, driven by a rise of 8.6 per cent in international capacity and 7.2 per cent in low-cost carrier capacity.

Capacity is forecast to grow by 11.8 per cent between September 2026 and March 2027, with strong increases projected for lower-demand months.

Year-round appeal

Italy’s summer dependence rate is 52.8 per cent, well below Greece (79.1 per cent) and Croatia (72.9 per cent).

Nearly two in three events take place in the low season, accounting for 58.2 per cent of total expected event attendance.

Beyond the hotspots

Destinations in Puglia, Calabria and Basilicata make up nine of the 15 fastest-growing emerging destinations, including Reggio Calabria, Bari and Tropea. The ranking is based on growth in accommodation-related reviews on major online travel agencies.

Sentiment

International visitors, who account for nearly half of all travellers, gave Italy a sentiment score of 87 out of 100, against 85 among domestic travellers. The analysis covered Google, Booking.com and TripAdvisor.

Sentiment improved year on year among visitors from all four leading source markets: Germany (up 0.63 percentage points), the United Kingdom (0.43), Spain (0.42) and France (0.39).

Culture and food

Art and culture and food and wine remain the leading demand drivers, at 38 per cent and 15 per cent respectively. Cultural activities make up 48.8 per cent of reviewed experiences, while gastronomy accounts for 21.3 per cent and has the highest average rating at 9.7 out of 10.

Data Appeal chief marketing and communications officer Carlos Cendra said: “Italian tourism is entering a new phase, expanding both in time and space. Travel demand is becoming more evenly distributed throughout the year, while a broader range of destinations is gaining momentum across the country.

“The challenge now is not simply to attract more visitors, but to turn this evolution into higher-quality demand and more balanced, sustainable growth, spreading the value of tourism across more destinations and seasons.”
