Delta Air Lines is expanding its Seamless Baggage Transfer service to Sydney–Los Angeles flights, allowing connecting passengers to skip collecting and rechecking their luggage when travelling onwards through the US.

Rolled out on October 13 2026, the service enables checked baggage to be screened in Sydney before passengers arrive at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), saving customers up to 25 minutes during connections.

Using advanced X-ray screening technology, baggage is screened in Sydney and securely reviewed by US Customs and Border Protection before the flight lands. Passengers can then proceed directly to their connecting gate, similar to a domestic transfer, while their bags are automatically transferred to their final destination.

The benefit applies to customers travelling on nonstop Sydney–Los Angeles flights, as well as those beginning their journey in other Australian cities and connecting through Sydney onto the nonstop service to LA.

A more seamless travel experience

“Delta is focused on removing friction from the travel experience so customers can spend less time navigating the airport and more time enjoying their journey,” Delta’s Vice President – Asia Pacific, Jeff Moomaw said.

“The expansion of Seamless Baggage Transfer to Sydney-Los Angeles flights gives our customers a faster, more predictable connection experience when arriving in the United States.”

“We’re proud to support Delta Air Lines in bringing Seamless Baggage Transfer to customers travelling from Sydney to Los Angeles,” Sydney Airport chief aviation officer Greg Botham said.

“It’s a practical but important improvement that will make connecting through LAX easier for passengers and a great example of how collaboration across airports, airlines and border agencies can simplify the international travel experience.”

Where available, Seamless Baggage Transfer has reduced customs interactions at US airports by more than 65 per cent, according to Delta. The airline also said that, in situations where an unexpected late arrival would previously have caused customers to miss their onward flights under the baggage recheck process, the service has enabled the majority of customers to successfully catch their connections.

The airline said it continues to explore opportunities to expand Seamless Baggage Transfer to additional markets in the future.

Fast, free Wi-Fi expansion

The carrier also announced the rollout of fast, free Delta Sync Wi-Fi across its transpacific services this month.

The rollout completes the final major region of Delta’s global connectivity network, making it the only US global carrier to offer free Wi-Fi across its global network.
