Smartraveller has lowered its travel advice for Qatar and the United Arab Emirates to Level 2 – exercise a high degree of caution – in an update published today.

Travellers choosing to visit or transit through either country are urged to monitor current events and be prepared to change plans at short notice, with the alert noting that the regional security situation is still unpredictable and tensions remain elevated.

Six countries remain at Level 3 – reconsider your need to travel – including Bahrain, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman and Saudi Arabia. Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria and Yemen stay at Level 4 – do not travel.

The global alert also warns that airspace closures can happen with little to no warning and that airlines may cancel or limit flights because of fuel shortages.

Travellers are advised to check their insurance covers delays, cancellations and changes to advice levels.
