With the 26th World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) Global Summit arriving in Valletta from 7\u20139 October, Malta is set to take centre stage in front of some of the biggest names in global tourism.<\/strong><\/p>\n For a destination that can be crossed in little more than an hour, Malta packs an extraordinary amount into its compact archipelago. Its UNESCO-listed capital, Valletta, is a maze of Baroque architecture, museums and churches, framed by some of the Mediterranean\u2019s most striking harbour views.<\/p>\n But the decision to host the WTTC Global Summit here is more than a moment in the spotlight. Malta\u2019s growing visitation numbers, expanding tourism offering and year-round appeal point to a destination that is increasingly confident in its place on the international stage.<\/p>\n Malta has also joined the WTTC as a Destination Partner, strengthening its relationship with the global tourism body as it prepares to welcome industry leaders to its shores.<\/p>\n The destination has seen continued growth across both visitor numbers and expenditure as it works toward the goals of its Malta Tourism Strategy 2021-2030.<\/p>\n Malta\u2019s tourism sector reached a record \u20ac3.9 billion in tourist expenditure in 2025, representing an 18.6 per cent increase on the previous year.<\/p>\n And the momentum has continued into 2026. Between January and May, more than 1.67 million travellers visited the islands, up 17.9 per cent on the same period in 2025.<\/p>\n Tourist expenditure during the first five months of the year reached an estimated \u20ac1.34 billion, a 14.7 per cent increase year on year.<\/p>\n The figures point to sustained demand for a destination that has spent the past several years broadening its proposition and investing in tourism beyond the traditional summer holiday.<\/p>\n WTTC\u2019s latest Economic Impact Research forecasts that Travel & Tourism will contribute US$4.9 billion to Malta\u2019s economy in 2026, accounting for 16.9 per cent of GDP and supporting 72,200 jobs.<\/p>\n So, what is driving this demand?<\/p>\n The tiny archipelago punches well above its weight in terms of tourism offering, packing 8,500 years of history, a well-established food and wine culture and some of Europe\u2019s most breathtaking landscapes into a remarkably compact region.<\/p>\n Travellers can move easily between Malta\u2019s diverse portfolio of travel highlights with ancient temples, rugged coastlines, sun-drenched plazas and pristine stretches of sand never more than a short drive apart.<\/p>\n English is also an official language, and Malta\u2019s location just south of Sicily makes it an easy addition to a broader European holiday.<\/p>\n A growing luxury and wellness scene is seeing restored noble residences and palazzos transformed into intimate accommodation, with spa facilities and restorative retreats popping up across the islands.<\/p>\n Gastronomy is increasingly part of the draw, too. Alongside local restaurants serving up traditional dishes, a growing Michelin presence and boutique wineries are giving travellers another reason to linger.<\/p>\n Malta and its sister islands also offer more than 120 dive sites, with traditional festas and cultural celebrations scattered throughout the year providing reasons to visit outside the peak summer months.<\/p>\n Valletta may be Malta\u2019s headline destination, but looking beyond the capital reveals a cast of stellar destinations.<\/p>\n The Three Cities \u2013 Vittoriosa, Senglea and Cospicua \u2013 are best described as living pieces of history, with winding medieval streets, striking architecture and historic harbours offering a glimpse of Malta\u2019s maritime past.<\/p>\n Mdina, the former capital, charms with its ornate cathedral and golden fortified walls. Known as The Silent City, Mdina is home to fewer than 300 residents, and even fewer cars.<\/p>\n Across the water, Gozo offers travellers a taste of island life, ideal for those seeking nature, wellness, village culture and a slower pace. Comino, meanwhile, boasts turquoise waters, hidden coves and a wealth of swimming, snorkelling, diving and boating experiences.<\/p>\n Hosting the WTTC Global Summit offers more than just another tourism milestone for advisors to point to.
