Ahead of\u00a0the\u00a0final appeal\u00a0hearing\u00a0at\u00a0Tunisia\u2019s Court of Cassation\u00a0on 3 September\u00a0in the unjust \u201cconspiracy case\u201d,\u00a0which\u00a0is a\u00a0chance to overturn the convictions of opposition figures jailed solely because of their peaceful political opposition,\u00a0Sara Hashash, Deputy Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa\u00a0at Amnesty International said:\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cTunisia\u2019s\u00a0authorities\u00a0must seize\u00a0this\u00a0opportunity to rectify a travesty of justice that\u00a0has\u00a0upturned\u00a0the lives of\u00a034\u00a0prominent opposition figures, human rights defenders and lawyers\u00a0who were convicted\u00a0on unfounded charges\u00a0in a\u00a0mass trial\u00a0marred by\u00a0due process violations.\u00a0These defendants\u00a0were targeted with politically motivated charges and\u00a0should have never been imprisoned in the first place.\u00a0Many of them have been languishing in jail\u00a0with deteriorating health\u00a0problems, with\u00a0recent successive heatwaves further worsening\u00a0detention conditions inside\u00a0poorly ventilated cells.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\nIt is time to put an\u00a0end\u00a0to\u00a0this pattern of instrumentalizing\u00a0the justice system\u00a0to target\u00a0dissent.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It is time to put an\u00a0end\u00a0to\u00a0this pattern of instrumentalizing\u00a0the justice system\u00a0to target\u00a0dissent.\u00a0Authorities\u00a0must\u00a0ensure that\u00a0prison\u00a0conditions\u00a0across the country\u00a0comply with\u00a0international standards and\u00a0that\u00a0all detainees\u00a0have regular access to their families,\u00a0lawyers\u00a0and adequate healthcare.\u00a0\u201c\u00a0<\/p>\n
Background<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n
On 18 April 2025, following a mass trial based on unfounded charges\u00a0and\u00a0marred by a litany of fair trial rights violations, the Tunis Criminal Court of First Instance convicted 37\u00a0individuals,\u00a0including prominent politicians, lawyers and human rights defenders,\u00a0on\u00a0spurious \u201cState security\u201d charges and sentenced them to terms of imprisonment ranging from four to 66 years.\u00a0<\/p>\n
On 27 November 2025, the Tunis Court of Appeal upheld the convictions of 34 defendants and imposed prison sentences ranging from five to 45 years, following proceedings marred by serious violations of fair-trial rights. Those imprisoned include Ayachi Hammami, Chaima Issa, Ahmed Nejib Chebbi,\u00a0Jaouhar\u00a0Ben Mbarek, Issam Chebbi, Ghazi\u00a0Chaouachi, Ridha Belhaj, Khayam Turki and Abdelhamid Jelassi, Sahbi\u00a0Atig\u00a0and Said Ferjani. Several defendants have been arbitrarily detained since February 2023 solely for exercising their human rights.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
