Sydney\u2019s newest airport has plenty to prove. While its promise of greater capacity, convenience and competition is appealing, concerns around accessibility from the CBD and a relatively limited flight network at launch have prompted some questions about just how much it will change the way Sydneysiders travel.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Australia\u2019s first new airport in more than 50 years officially welcomed its first passengers on October 25, with Jetstar operating inaugural domestic services to the Gold Coast and Melbourne.<\/p>\n

The following day, Air New Zealand launched WSI\u2019s first international passenger service, connecting Western Sydney with Auckland.<\/p>\n

On the ground for the launch of both routes, there was no denying the significance of the occasion. More than 40 years in the making, and backed by a $5.3 billion investment, the opening was a milestone that was difficult not to get swept up in.<\/p>\n

The excitement in the terminal was palpable with airport representative cheering, embracing and even shedding a few tears as WSI saw its first passengers take flight.<\/p>\n

For Western Sydney residents, the prospect of no longer having to trek across the city to catch a flight is a significant drawcard. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But with big ambitions for the airport comes plenty of expectation, and questions <\/span>remain<\/span> about whether its growing network and transport connections will live up to the promise.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A local perspective\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The appeal has been immediate for residents of Western Sydney.<\/p>\n

Penrith-based business traveller, Jose Sanz lives just half an hour from WSI, making it a far more convenient option than travelling across Sydney for work.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor someone who travels interstate regularly, that flexibility is a game-changer,\u201d Sanz said.<\/p>\n

Its round-the-clock operations could also prove a major advantage, particularly for corporate travellers looking to make the most of early departures, late arrivals and same-day trips.<\/p>\n

Room to grow<\/strong><\/h2>\n

But WSI\u2019s ambitions extend well beyond convenience.<\/p>\n

CEO Simon Hickey said that the airport has been designed to accommodate up to 82 million passengers annually as demand grows, with more than 250 destinations expected to be accessible through its network in just over a year.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe airport is built for the next century. We can continue to grow in line with demand,\u201d Hickey said.<\/p>\n
