African leaders attending the Russia-Africa summit must call on the Russian authorities to immediately end the coercive and deceptive recruitment of African nationals into Russia\u2019s military forces to fight against Ukraine, Amnesty International\u2019s African section directors said in an open letter<\/a> ahead of the summit, which takes place from 28 to 29 October in Moscow.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor African leaders to remain silent on this issue would be a profound disservice to the people of their countries. We urge them to address this issue directly with the Russian authorities at the Russia-Africa Summit 2026 and call on Russia to take immediate steps to end these practices, which in many cases amount to trafficking \u2014 a crime under international law,\u201d said directors of Amnesty International\u2019s sections across Africa.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt a moment when many African governments are speaking up about the enduring legacy of colonialism, and the importance of sovereignty and African agency in international affairs, they must reject any practice that treats nationals of African countries as a commodity for other countries\u2019 political and military objectives.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a briefing published 10 September 2026, <\/em>\u201cRussia: Trafficking of Foreign Nationals to Fight in Ukraine<\/em><\/a>\u201d<\/em>,Amnesty International documented how the Russian authorities recruit people from African countries through deception, coercion and the exploitation of economic hardship amounting in many cases to trafficking, drawing them into devastating military combat, far from home, and often in circumstances which leave them little or no choice but to fight. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n
