When Hoshino Resorts opened HOSHINOYA Nara Prison in June this year, it didn\u2019t just add another address to its ultra-luxury portfolio \u2013 it transformed the last of the \u201cFive Great Prisons\u201d of Japan\u2019s 118-year-old Meiji era cellblocks into luxury hotel suites.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Former Nara Prison, in Nara City, is a government-designated Important Cultural Property, and Hoshino Resorts has approached its redesign as an exercise in cultural regeneration rather than demolition and rebuild. The prison\u2019s high redbrick walls remain; what sits inside them has been reimagined entirely, with cells becoming suites, the central guardhouse becoming a lounge, the old infirmary becoming a museum gallery, and the former exercise yards turned into spaces for quiet reflection. Guests check in at what was once the prison\u2019s intake desk, passing through the same gates new inmates once faced.<\/p>\n

Cells into suites<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The hotel\u2019s 48 all-suite rooms are formed from combinations of nine, 10 or 11 former cells knocked together, up to the 11-cell Deluxe Suite with its own dressing lounge and expansive living area. Original brickwork \u2013 laid by the prison\u2019s first inmates \u2013 has been exposed beneath century-old plaster, and period ceiling mouldings have been retained throughout. Amenities lean into the reflective mood of the setting: curated books, relaxation-focused music, custom fragrances, and a selection of local sake and wine.<\/p>\n

The former assembly room, once used for prison ceremonies and lectures, is now the hotel\u2019s central lounge \u2013 an atrium framing views down the five cellblock wings that radiate from it. And in a separate building that once held solitary confinement cells, guests now dine on a four-course tasting menu called the \u201cGastronomy Chronicle\u201d, tracing Japan\u2019s Meiji Restoration through courses titled Early Development, Maturity, Modern Day and Future. Breakfast includes a signature Civilisational Modernisation Breakfast (\u00a56,380, $AU56) built around Western dishes introduced to Japan during the period, alongside Japanese, Western and light continental options.<\/p>\n

Cultural programming includes a complimentary Akane Tea Salon, an adults-only Gramophone Soiree, an Evening Fragrance Blending workshop (\u00a512,100, AU$105) and a Meiji-inspired morning fitness session using dumbbells carved from local Yoshino cedar.<\/p>\n

Three sections of the former prison have been set aside as the Nara Prison Museum, which opened in April this year ahead of the hotel. One of the original five cellblock wings has been left unrenovated to show the conditions of the prison\u2019s original occupants; another building explores five tenets of Meiji-era criminal rehabilitation \u2013 discipline, meals, hygiene, labour and freedom; and the former infirmary now hosts artwork by former inmates on themes of crime, punishment and time. General admission is \u00a53,500 (around AU$30), and it\u2019s complimentary for hotel guests.<\/p>\n

Rooms start from \u00a5147,000 a night (roughly AU$1,300, depending on exchange rates), excluding meals.<\/p>\n
