Some will be less depending on our network management strategy.”

Currently, approximately 45 per cent of Qatar Airways’ widebody fleet features Qsuite, but the airline is working towards a more consistent premium offering across its aircraft.

Al-Khater revealed plans to reduce the number of cabin configurations from approximately 25 to just nine by the middle of the next decade.

“The focus is going to be on consistency, whether it’s on product, service, air and ground,” he said.

The airline’s next-generation Qsuite product is also moving closer to entering service, with the first installation expected aboard an Airbus A350 during the European summer of 2027.

The upgraded product will offer enhanced privacy and flexible seating arrangements, including redesigned quad suites for groups and families, as well as paired window seats that can open into a shared space.

70 weekly flights as Qatar Airways doubles down on Australia

Al-Khater’s comments come as the airline accelerates its Australian growth strategy.

Qatar Airways and Virgin Australia are targeting approximately 70 weekly flights between Australia and Doha by the end of 2026, with further opportunities being explored across their combined networks.

Qatar Airways currently operates approximately 28 weekly services under its own network arrangements, with plans to increase that figure to at least 35.

Melbourne is heading towards double-daily services, Canberra flights via Melbourne are expected to return in December, and Sydney is set to welcome a third service.

The Virgin Australia partnership, which launched international services in June 2025, has also opened the door to discussions about further cooperation beyond aircraft and route networks.

Al-Khater said discussions were taking place around loyalty, customer experience, digital integration and airport lounges, with a focus on providing a more consistent experience for passengers travelling across both airlines.

The airline plans to open four new lounges globally in 2027, while further opportunities for cooperation with Virgin Australia passengers are being explored.

The CEO also suggested there could be room for greater engagement with Qantas through the Oneworld alliance, despite the historically difficult relationship between the two carriers.

“I’m not going to linger on any of the history,” he said.

He pointed to opportunities within Oneworld while emphasising that Qatar Airways’ relationship with Virgin Australia remained of paramount importance.

Western Sydney could go daily earlier than expected

The airline’s newly announced Western Sydney International Airport service is scheduled to launch in December 2027, initially operating three flights a week between Doha and Sydney’s second international gateway.

Although the airline has outlined ambitions to increase services to daily by the end of 2028, Al-Khater suggested the expansion could happen sooner.

“It could be early,” he said when asked whether daily flights might arrive ahead of schedule.

The CEO identified Western Sydney’s 24-hour operations and growing passenger catchment as major attractions.

Asked whether Qatar Airways would have committed to the airport without financial incentives, he was unequivocal.

“We would have, yes,” he said.

He explained that while airport incentives played a role in airline decision-making, the strength of the catchment area was ultimately more important.

Cargo was another significant consideration, with the airline identifying opportunities to connect Australian exporters in agriculture, natural resources and other sectors with international markets.

138 aircraft coming as airline reshapes global network

Qatar Airways is planning to add approximately 138 aircraft over the next five years, including more than 15 in 2027, as it expands its global network.

The airline is also retiring approximately 17 ageing Airbus A330 aircraft, which Al-Khater said no longer offered a product consistent with the Qatar Airways brand.

The next wave of deliveries will include Airbus A350s, Boeing 787s and Airbus A321LR aircraft, with the airline also hoping to welcome the Boeing 777-9.

Qatar Airways hopes to operate its first A321LR service on 1 January 2027, coinciding with the beginning of the airline’s 30th anniversary year.

The aircraft will feature 16 business-class seats in a 1-1 configuration, offering greater privacy than the airline’s existing narrowbody products.

The airline expects to receive approximately 60 A321neo-family aircraft, including 10 long-range A321LR variants.

Al-Khater said the A321LR aircraft would feature Starlink connectivity from the outset, as the airline continues investing in onboard connectivity and entertainment.

The goal, he explained, is to reduce the difference in passenger experience between long-haul widebody flights and connecting services operated by smaller aircraft.

With premium economy under consideration, first class in design and more business-class seats potentially on the way, the airline’s next phase of growth is set to be as much about what passengers experience onboard as where they can fly.

kabarsula SLOT

Qatar Airways could
