Intrepid Travel Australia and New Zealand managing director Brett Mitchell has been appointed to the board of Great Walks of Australia, the collective of the country\u2019s premier guided multi-day walking experiences.<\/strong><\/p>\n Mitchell, who has nearly 20 years\u2019 experience in tourism, joined Intrepid in 2008 and has held roles including group finance director, chief commercial officer and head of the global inbound business. Under his leadership, Australia has risen from outside the top 10 to become Intrepid\u2019s number one global destination.<\/p>\n A chartered accountant and Fellow of CA ANZ, he also sits on the boards of the Australian Travel Industry Association (ATIA), the Tourism and Events NT Advisory Board and Destination Canada\u2019s Australian Strategic Advisory Board. He was inducted into Intrepid\u2019s Hall of Fame this year.<\/p>\n Great Walks of Australia chair Gary Smith said the appointment reflected the organisation\u2019s commitment to strong governance and future-focused leadership.<\/p>\n \u201cBrett brings a rare combination of commercial and financial expertise, governance experience and a genuine commitment to responsible tourism,\u201d Smith said. \u201cHis understanding of today\u2019s travellers and his work alongside government, tourism bodies and First Nations partners will be invaluable as we work with our member walks, Tourism Australia, State and industry partners.\u201d<\/p>\n Mitchell said walking tourism was enjoying strong momentum.<\/p>\n \u201cWhen it\u2019s done well, walking tourism helps protect the places it depends on.
