But WebJet remains a concern, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have some concerns about the way that is running,\u201d he said. \u201cOur investment is currently sitting at 20.29 per cent of the shares in the group, and it\u2019s crossed the 20 per cent threshold because of the share buyback, which they are continuing to maintain, despite our best efforts to tell them that\u2019s not really a very good idea.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it\u2019s fallen in value. We all know that. It\u2019s less than what we paid for it,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s less than what just about everyone paid for it at the moment, I have to say, and I think that the major shareholders in that group, including ourselves, are not very happy with its performance to date.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, Andrew Burnes and Cinzia Burnes withdrew their nominations for places on the Webjet Group board.<\/p>\n<p>Retail Travel Investments Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Helloworld, notified the market of the decision to withdraw the two nominations.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Staffing levels maintained<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_757976\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-757976\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-757976\" alt=\"Helloworld Travel opens its latest store in Victoria.\" width=\"1024\" height=\"685\" src=\"https:\/\/travelweekly.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/IMG_0950_EDIT2-scaled-e1747722791242-1024x685.jpg\"\/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-757976\" src=\"https:\/\/travelweekly.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/IMG_0950_EDIT2-scaled-e1747722791242-1024x685.jpg\" alt=\"Helloworld Travel opens its latest store in Victoria.\" width=\"1024\" height=\"685\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-757976\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A Helloworld Travel store opens in Victoria.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On Helloworld\u2019s performance, Burnes added that underlying expenses increased by 6 per cent due to the need to maintain staffing levels during the Middle East situation but was now recovering well.<\/p>\n<p>Operating cash flows for FY26 improved significantly compared to the previous year, driven by a more balanced number of BSP payments and collections.<\/p>\n<p>The company has made significant investments in technology, including AI, to enhance efficiency and service for customers. Despite the challenges posed by COVID-19, the company remains optimistic about the future of travel, driven by the enduring desire for travel experiences. The company\u2019s customer base, with an average age of 55, continues to value the personalised service provided by travel agents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have the largest network of travel agents and brokers across Australia and New Zealand, and we\u2019ve got 2,600 agencies and brokers, and there\u2019s over 10,000 travel professionals working in those businesses,\u201d he said. \u201cSo, they are doing a fabulous job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Burnes said there continues to be significant demand for the services of advisors under the strength of the Helloworld brand alongside its other brands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe trust and the support services that our agents offer to customers is really very, very much appreciated and needed,\u201d he said. \u201cI see the demand for services from travel agents continuing to, in fact, expand. Our agents report that their businesses are growing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe number of customers coming in the door is growing, and they\u2019re going extremely well. (Travel) is not like buying a television. It\u2019s not like buying a motor car. It\u2019s not like buying a lot of products. Travel is complex. Anyone who pretends that international travel isn\u2019t complex is kidding themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Face-to-face over AI\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Burnes said Helloworld\u2019s investment in AI and technology had delivered an enormous amount of efficiency and service to customers.<\/p>\n<p>He said while the company would continue to invest in AI, he isn\u2019t buying into the \u201ctremendous amount of hype\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we look at why a customer walks into an agency, or calls an agency, or corresponds with an agency \u2013 that\u2019s a travel agent, not some sort of digital agent \u2013 when they are engaged with their travel agent, why do they do it like that?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy aren\u2019t they just happy to sit home, punch it into the computer, and book it all themselves, utilising some sort of AI itinerary generator or what have you? Well, people actually enjoy the process of planning their holiday.
