Reacting to an announcement today by France\u2019s Interior Minister that the use of stun grenades in the policing of\u202fhigh school student protests will be temporarily suspended, Anne Savinel-Barras, President of Amnesty International France, said: \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWhile the suspension of the use of these grenades in the policing of the current high school student protests is an important and welcome first step, further action is needed. These dangerous devices, which have a long history of causing serious injuries, must be permanently banned from the policing of all protests. Failure to do so will inevitably result in more serious and preventable injuries.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cProtests should not be battlefields. Stun grenades are designed to shock, disorient, and sow panic, often among dense crowds at demonstrations. Some can cause permanent hearing loss as well as life-changing mutilations due to the blast and shrapnel. \u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cA permanent ban on the use of all stun grenades in the policing of all public assemblies must be part of a complete overhaul of regulations around the use of force against all protesters, to ensure France fulfils all its obligations under international human rights law, including the right to peaceful assembly.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Amnesty International France has also long been calling for the suspension of the use ofLBDs (\u201clanceur de balle de d\u00e9fense\u201d) in the policing of protests. This weapon has already caused numerous serious injuries in France, particularly during the crackdown on the Yellow Vests movement.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
On 7 October 2026, Interior Minister Laurent Nunez announced on RTL<\/u><\/a> radio that the use of stun grenades will be suspended when policing the high school student protests, following the serious injury sustained by 15-year old teenager in Lens, pending an investigation into this case.
