Members of the business community heard thoughts on artificial intelligence, asking questions and sharing ideas on the topic that has everyone questioning and wondering what comes next in a technology-obsessed world.<\/p>\n
AI was at the center of the discussion with two community leaders who offered input and food for thought on something everyone from Pope Leo to your local librarian has asked people to consider. The Catholic Business Network<\/a> hosted Father Joseph W. McQuaide, an administrator and leader in the Diocese of Wilmington, and Pasquale \u201cPat\u201d Zingo, a Newark resident, scholar and head of a software firm, for a forum held with local business leaders.<\/p>\n About 50 people joined the quarterly meeting of business professionals at St. Joseph on the Brandywine parish in Wilmington.<\/a><\/p>\n Zingo converted to Roman Catholicism while working on his doctorate in Artificial Intelligence at the University of Delaware in 2022. He completed his Ph.D. in 2024 after writing his thesis \u201c<\/i>Applications and Evaluation of Deep Generative Augmentation Methods\u201d, and now runs FNDRSNG, a small software business which provides tech support to Christian radio stations.<\/p>\n Zingo likend the issue to \u201cperformance vs. worth\u201d with the idea that \u201cAI screens resumes better than HR. But there needs to be moral component, a responsibility.<\/p>\n \u201cAI can\u2019t be the only metric,\u201d he said. \u201cThe tool is made to say no to most things. That\u2019s not a good thing.\u201d<\/p>\n Father McQuaide is chancellor of the Diocese of Wilmington, rector of Cathedral of St. Peter and pastor of St. Patrick\u2019s and St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception in Wilmington.<\/p>\n \u201cIf intelligence simply means processing information, then it may become better than we are,\u201d Father McQuaide said. \u201cIt might write something in 10 seconds that might take me an hour. I\u2019d like to think I\u2019d have a little more flair.<\/p>\n \u201cWe have freedom. We don\u2019t just process info \u2026 we can love, forgive, sacrifice ourselves to help someone else. Pope Leo is concerned for us considering that reality \u2026 focus on what makes us more profoundly human. All of us have a dignity that is bestowed on us by God.\u201d<\/p>\n Near the end of this year\u2019s encyclical \u201cMagnifica Humanitas,\u201d Pope Leo XIV senses that his reader may be feeling overwhelmed. \u201cAt this point,\u201d the Holy Father writes, \u201ca subtle temptation may emerge, namely the thought that the problems are too big and we are too small, and that our choices, therefore, cannot make a difference.\u201d<\/p>\n [Read the full text of \u201cMagnifica Humanitas\u201d here<\/a>]<\/p>\n The next breakfast meeting of Catholic Business Network focuses on \u201cLeadership with Purpose\u201d Dec. 4 at St. Jude the Apostle in Lewes.
