Damascus, Sept. 29 (SANA)<\/strong> Syria has imposed a precautionary freeze on about $104 million in assets of companies under investigation over oil-sector contracts, the head of its Central Commission for Control and Inspection, Amer al-Ali<\/a>, told SANA.<\/p>\n Al-Ali said the amount did not represent embezzled funds. The measure was intended to protect the state\u2019s rights while investigators examine whether certain contract terms were carried out after the agreements were signed, he said.<\/p>\n The commission had been reviewing the contracts under established procedures before the matter was reported in the media, al-Ali said.<\/p>\n He said the inquiry did not constitute an accusation against the Syrian Petroleum Company <\/a>or its employees. The company had cooperated with investigators and provided the requested documents and data, he added.<\/p>\n Any responsibility would be determined by the findings, with legal measures, including possible referral to the courts, to follow if warranted, al-Ali said.<\/p>\n
