ST. LOUIS \u2014 Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen \u2014 the 20th-century theologian, evangelizer and Catholic communications pioneer \u2014 \u201copened the door to the evangelization of the world,\u201d said Bishop Robert E. Barron of Winona-Rochester, Minnesota.<\/p>\n

The bishop shared his thoughts on Archbishop Sheen<\/a> in a Sept. 23 homily at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis, where hundreds gathered for vespers a day before the archbishop\u2019s beatification in that city.<\/p>\n

Archbishop Mitchell T. Rozanski of St. Louis presided over Evening Prayer, part of the Liturgy of the Hours, the Church\u2019s continuous cycle of daily prayer at set times.<\/p>\n

Although Archbishop Sheen\u2019s canonization cause was introduced in 2002 by his home Diocese of Peoria, Illinois, organizers selected St. Louis as the beatification site in order to better accommodate the thousands in attendance.<\/p>\n

Cardinals, bishops, priests, religious and lay faithful from around the country \u2014 along with Archbishop Gabriele G. Caccia, apostolic nuncio to the U.S. \u2014 were on hand for the vespers, which took place on the memorial of St. Pius (Pio) of Pietrelcina.<\/p>\n

Addressing the congregation, Bishop Barron said, \u201cI consider it one of the single privileges of my life to be able to preach this homily on the vigil of Fulton Sheen\u2019s beatification<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

He described Archbishop Sheen as \u201cmy model and inspiration,\u201d and as \u201cone of the pivotal players in the modern history of the Catholic Church\u201d who emerged amid a mid-20th-century Catholic \u201crenaissance\u201d that included \u201cGraham Greene, Dorothy Day, Jacques Maritain, Henri de Lubac, Thomas Merton, Evelyn Waugh and many others.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bishop Barron said Archbishop Sheen was \u201cby common consensus\u201d regarded as \u201cthe premier preacher in the English language in the 20th century.\u201d<\/p>\n

What made Archbishop Sheen \u201ca blessed, saintly man of God\u201d was his friendship with Jesus Christ, said Bishop Barron.<\/p>\n

Archbishop Sheen\u2019s description of his vocational discernment in his autobiography, \u201cTreasure in Clay,\u201d offers \u201ca template for anyone\u2019s relationship to the Lord,\u201d said Bishop Barron.<\/p>\n

Citing passages from the book, Bishop Barron said three stages mark the development of that relationship: recognizing God\u2019s transcendent holiness, reckoning with one\u2019s need for redemption and the mandate for mission \u201cas a bearer of grace to others.\u201d<\/p>\n

Archbishop Sheen embraced \u201cunmerited divine love,\u201d exemplified in Mary, whom he viewed in accord with Catholic theological tradition as \u201cthe prime instance of a human being receiving the unmerited love of God,\u201d said Bishop Barron.<\/p>\n

He noted that Mary \u201chaunts the spiritual life of Fulton Sheen, from his baptism in the Church of St. Mary to his ordination in the cathedral dedicated to Mary, to his deep devotion to the rosary, and finally to his more than 30 journeys to Lourdes to visit, as he put it, \u2018the woman I love.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Bishop Barron said that \u201cnowhere was Fulton Sheen\u2019s rootedness in the grace of Christ more apparent than in his practically lifelong dedication to the Holy Hour \u2014 the daily, uninterrupted, hour-long prayer in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament.\u201d<\/p>\n

The bishop stressed the importance of that practice in his own life, admitting he learned to embrace it from his students while he was rector of Mundelein Seminary from 2012-2015.<\/p>\n

\u201cI now savor the Holy Hour \u2026 in my private chapel every morning before commencing my work day,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

As he contemplated God\u2019s holiness, Archbishop Sheen was ready \u201cto admit his failures, his bad judgments, his personal weaknesses,\u201d said Bishop Barron.<\/p>\n

Through radio and television broadcasts, extensive writings, speaking engagements and missionary travels, Archbishop Sheen devoted his life to making Christ known to the world, said Bishop Barron.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo one in the 20th century walked the great path of mission with more flair and dedication than Fulton Sheen,\u201d said the bishop.<\/p>\n

And, he added, \u201cI believe that Fulton Sheen is, par excellence, the saint of the New Evangelization,\u201d the Church\u2019s renewed commitment \u2014 called for in particular by St. Paul VI and St. John Paul II \u2014 to fulfill Christ\u2019s command to bring the Gospel to all people.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnyone who seeks fresh language to bring the Gospel to our culture, anyone who preaches the ancient word with a heart on fire, anyone who dares to use the media of communication available to us today, is indebted to Fulton Sheen and finds in him a powerful heavenly friend and intercessor,\u201d said Bishop Barron.<\/p>\n
