Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen \u201cknew Jesus Christ, our Lord\u201d and understood that \u201cthe Gospel always sends us outward\u201d to share God\u2019s love with the world, said the homilist at Mass marking the anniversary of Archbishop Sheen\u2019s priestly ordination before his beatification Sept. 24.<\/p>\n

The Sept. 20 liturgy, at which Bishop Louis Tylka of Peoria presided, was celebrated at that diocese\u2019s Cathedral of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception, where Archbishop Sheen\u2019s remains are entombed.<\/p>\n

Homilist Father Peter James Alindogan, pastor of St. Veronica in Howell, New Jersey, admitted to the faithful in attendance that he was \u201coverwhelmed\u201d to stand in the pulpit for the occasion, having been invited by Msgr. Jason A. Gray, cathedral rector and executive director Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen Foundation<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cPreaching about Fulton Sheen is one thing,\u201d said Father Alindogan, a native of the Philippines who along with his parish duties serves as director of the Diocese of Trenton\u2019s Office of Missions. \u201cPreaching near Fulton Sheen is quite another.\u201d<\/p>\n

With the late archbishop\u2019s \u201cmortal remains\u201d a mere \u201ctwenty steps from where I stand right now,\u201d said Father Alindogan, \u201cI can almost hear him saying, \u2018Father, get to the point.’\u201d<\/p>\n

In his homily, Father Alindogan noted that Archbishop Sheen \u2014 a pioneer of Catholic media \u2014 was a master communicator<\/a>, and \u201ccould stand before a television camera with a blackboard and chalk and explain theology to America without PowerPoint.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat alone may qualify as a miracle,\u201d said Father Alindogan to laughter.<\/p>\n

But, said the priest, \u201cthe secret of Fulton Sheen\u201d wasn\u2019t television or microphones, but \u201cthe Blessed Sacrament\u201d whom he adored in his \u201cdaily Holy Hour.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBefore Sheen spoke to millions, he sat silently before our blessed Lord,\u201d said Father Alindogan. \u201cBefore he stood beneath studio lights, he knelt before the sanctuary lamp.\u201d<\/p>\n

And, said Father Alindogan, \u201cPerhaps that is why people listened. They sense that he was not merely speaking about Christ. He knew Jesus Christ, our Lord. That may be one of the most important lessons his priesthood leaves us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Father Alindogan emphasized that Archbishop Sheen \u201cdeeply\u201d understood that \u201cwe are one in the mystical body of Christ.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pointing to the day\u2019s Gospel, the parable of the workers in the vineyard (Mt 20:1-16a), Father Alindogan said that \u201cSheen also understood something else: Prayer cannot end in the chapel.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rather, said Father Alindogan, \u201cThe Eucharist sends us out.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Christ we adore before the tabernacle sends us through the church doors\u201d to \u201cthe wounded, to the forgotten, to the lonely, to the poor, to the searching,\u201d he said. \u201cSometimes across the street, sometimes across an ocean.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cA Eucharistic heart must become a missionary heart,\u201d Father Alindogan said. \u201cThat is why the landowner in today\u2019s Gospel keeps going out. And so must the Church.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe cannot simply wait for people to find us here in our places of worship,\u201d he explained. \u201cWe have to go looking for them in the marketplace of life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Just as the Gospel parable\u2019s laborers waited in the market square to be sought, said Father Alindogan, so today the Church must reach out to \u201cthe young person wondering, \u2018What am I supposed to do with my life?,’\u201d the \u201cman or woman away from the Church for many years,\u201d the \u201cperson sitting in the back pew, wondering whether God could possibly forgive what he or she has done years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n

Also longing to be invited are \u201cthe widow who feels alone,\u201d \u201cthe family carrying a burden nobody else sees,\u201d \u201cthe illegal immigrant\u201d and \u201cthose who hold power in our society and our government,\u201d Father Alindogan said.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo the person who thinks, \u2018God has forgotten me,\u2019 the Lord says, \u2018You too. There is a place for you in the vineyard,’\u201d Father Alindogan said. \u201cThat is mission.\u201d<\/p>\n

He stressed that \u201cthe vineyard cannot stop at Peoria or Trenton,\u201d and \u201cit cannot stop at the border of our country,\u201d for \u201cthe vineyard is the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Archbishop Sheen\u2019s famed television sign-off phrase captured that spirit well, said Father Alindogan.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Bye now, and God love you,’\u201d he quoted. \u201cSimple words, but perhaps after all they contain the whole missionary spirit, the whole Gospel. \u2026 God loves you enough to come looking for you. God loves you enough to call you. Once you know that love, God sends you out that someone else may know it too.\u201d<\/p>\n
