Thousands of flights across the US faced delays and cancellations on Monday after a telecommunications outage disrupted major airports in New York, Boston and Philadelphia.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Flight-tracking website FlightAware recorded around 7,000 delays and cancellations<\/a><\/span> across the US. These included more than 1,400 flights at New York\u2019s three major airports.<\/p>\n

The disruption coincided with the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where around 130 world leaders were gathering.<\/p>\n

What caused the US flight disruption?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) temporarily halted incoming flights at several major airports. These included John F. Kennedy International Airport, LaGuardia, Newark Liberty International Airport, Philadelphia and Boston.<\/p>\n

Air traffic controllers also diverted more than 100 flights to other airports.<\/p>\n

US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy initially blamed an Amtrak construction crew for the outage.<\/p>\n

However, NJ Transit subsequently confirmed that a crew working on its Delco Lead project in New Jersey had accidentally cut a fibre-optic cable.<\/p>\n

NJ Transit said the crew had been working approximately 10 feet from utility markings at the site. The agency is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.<\/p>\n

FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said a primary communications circuit had failed at Philadelphia Terminal Radar Approach Control. The facility manages air traffic across the region.<\/p>\n

Authorities later discovered that the backup fibre-optic cable had also been severed, leaving the facility without its usual communications systems.<\/p>\n

Philadelphia International Airport also halted incoming flights. Meanwhile, Washington\u2019s Reagan National Airport temporarily stopped flights for more than an hour due to air traffic volume issues.<\/p>\n

When did flights resume?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The disruption lasted approximately eight hours before crews repaired the damaged telecommunications lines.<\/p>\n

Duffy confirmed late on Monday that airport operations across the US Northeast were resuming.<\/p>\n

However, passengers continued to face delays as airlines worked to clear the backlog.<\/p>\n

The incident comes amid ongoing concerns about the ageing US air traffic control system, which has experienced several significant telecommunications outages in recent years.<\/p>\n
