Dialog photo\/Cathy Rossi<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>        <!-- content --><\/p>\n<p>When summer turns to fall and we pull out sweaters and wraps, we find soft comfort in clothing that keeps us warm.<\/p>\n<p>Add a little love and a lot of prayers woven into a hand-knitted shawl and you capture the compassion and sacred spirit of the new \u201cLoving Stitches Prayer Shawl Ministry\u201d at .<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we are sick or discouraged, we know what it feels like to have the arm of someone around us.\u00a0 It makes a difference,\u201d said Bridget Wheatley, who started the Prayer Shawl Ministry at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stannbb.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">St. Ann Parish in Bethany Beach<\/a> after being part of one at her former parish, Saints Peter and Paul, in Easton, Maryland.<\/p>\n<div class=\"td-a-rec td-a-rec-id-content_inline  tdi_2 td_block_template_1\">\n<div class=\"a-single a-844\"><a class=\"gofollow\" data-track=\"ODQ0LDAsNjA=\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ursuline.org\/admissions\/visit\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thedialog.nyc3.digitaloceanspaces.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/09090233\/Ursuline.Fall26-Dialog-Ad-800x100px.png\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"a-single a-826\"><a class=\"gofollow\" data-track=\"ODI2LDAsNjA=\" href=\"https:\/\/stophb140.com\/\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thedialog.nyc3.digitaloceanspaces.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/08092138\/HB.140.LB_.1.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Almost immediately, 25 women joined the group of knitters and crocheters. About a dozen women show up every week to pray and knit together. They love working, praying, conversing and sharing a camaraderie and creative energy that exists in the group.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt makes me feel so good assisting in someone else\u2019s need,\u201d said Pat Sherman.\u00a0 \u201cYou can see the fruits of your work, your accomplishment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEspecially when people are battling illness and become weary, they are searching for comfort in different ways,\u201d said Joy Beatty-Bannister, who co-leads the ministry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou never know the sense of peace we\u2019re providing. We all need prayers,\u201d said Beatty-Bannister.<\/p>\n<p>When we are sick or deeply worried, comfort comes in many forms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want people to feel not just our arms, but God\u2019s arms around them on their journey. And, we want them to know we are continually praying for them,\u201d said Wheatley.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, the ministry was asked to provide a prayer shawl to a gentleman in hospice care.\u00a0 They scurried and were able to get a shawl to comfort him. He died hours after receiving it.<\/p>\n<p>Maryann Johnson, a retired teacher, tells the story of how she provided a shawl to a teacher\u2019s mother who, in turn, gave it to her daughter, who is now creatively using it for her students as a comforting wrap during a little modified time-out \u2014 in a prayer chair in her classroom. The teacher even uses it herself for difficult days.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe may never know the full extent of a shawl\u2019s use or meaning for everyone,\u201d but recipients all get our love and prayers,\u201d said Wheatley.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, it feels so good. The shawl and the prayers that I need. Wonderful, simply wonderful,\u201d exclaimed Ann Tansey upon receipt of her shawl.
