Sydney Airport has rolled out a new fleet of 50 electric buses as part of its push to reach net zero for scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The fleet \u2013 made up of 25 dual-control airfield apron buses and 25 \u201cCitirider\u201d electric shuttle buses \u2013 will progressively replace diesel-powered vehicles used to move passengers and staff across landside and airside operations. It has been supplied by Australian electric vehicle manufacturer Bus & Coach International (BCI).<\/p>\n

As part of the rollout, digital displays onboard and at bus stops will give passengers live estimates of time-to-destination and wait times.<\/p>\n

The buses also carry commissioned artwork by Dharawal artist Shane Youngberry, developed in partnership with the Gujaga Foundation, Sydney Airport\u2019s First Nations Cultural Partner.<\/p>\n

Named \u201cGamay\u201d \u2013 the Dharawal word for Botany Bay \u2013 the design features sea creatures significant in Dharawal culture, including the girawaa (stingray) and dhanj (fish), and reflects the Dharawal People\u2019s connection to the land on which the airport operates.<\/p>\n

Sydney Airport Group Executive Government Relations, Sustainability and Legal Karen Tompkins said the fleet would cut the airport\u2019s scope 1 emissions, with the buses powered by 100 per cent renewable energy through a power purchase agreement, while also improving passenger experience through quieter, cleaner transport.<\/p>\n

Gujaga Foundation chief executive Ash Walker said the project gave Dharawal culture a platform in one of Australia\u2019s most visible public spaces, welcoming millions of visitors each year.<\/p>\n

Youngberry said the artwork told \u201ca story of pathways, connection and community\u201d, and that having it travel around the airport daily gave people from around the world a chance to connect with Dharawal culture during their journey.<\/p>\n

More than 42 million passengers travel through Sydney Airport each year, with the airport preparing for more than 72 million passengers annually by 2045.<\/p>\n
