Viking has floated out Viking Astrea<\/em>, the company\u2019s second hydrogen-powered cruise ship capable of operating with zero emissions, marking the first time the ship has touched water.<\/strong><\/p>\n The cruise line scheduled Viking Astrea<\/em> for delivery in May 2027 and she will spend her inaugural season sailing itineraries in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe.<\/p>\n \u201cThe float out of the Viking Astrea<\/em> represents another important milestone for Viking,\u201d Viking president and chief executive officer Leah Talactac said. \u201cFrom the beginning, we have sought thoughtful ways to design more efficient ships, and the Viking Astrea is an important step forward in that ongoing effort.\u201d<\/p>\n The cruise line held the float out ceremony at at Fincantieri\u2019s Ancona Shipyard. The ceremony denotes a ship is moving into its final stage of construction. After a two-day process that will set the Viking Astrea afloat, Viking will then move her to a nearby outfitting dock for final construction and interior build-out.<\/p>\n Viking Astrea<\/em> is classified as a small ship and has a gross tonnage of approximately 54,300 tons, with 499 staterooms that can host 998 guests. She is a sister ship in Viking\u2019s award-winning ocean fleet and will have a propulsion system based partially on liquefied hydrogen and fuel cells. The propulsion system will allow the ship to navigate and operate with zero emissions.<\/p>\n Isotta Fraschini Motori (IFM) enabled the ship\u2019s state-of-the-art propulsion system, which can produce up to six megawatts of power.<\/p>\n![\"Viking](\"https:\/\/travelweekly.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Resized_LS_00039-1024x683.png\"\/)
