Safety body warns of major issues days before disaster bandar SLOT INDONESIA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Six people have died and around 130 people are still missing after a ferry travelling between Java and Borneo capsized in bad weather.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Virgo Transport 8 was carrying 243 passengers and crew when it lost contact with its shipping company after leaving Surabaya in East Java.<\/p>\n<p>Rescuers have found more than 100 people alive. Six people have died and around 130 remain missing.<\/p>\n<p>Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi confirmed the ship had capsized but had not sunk.<\/p>\n<p>The disaster comes when Indonesia\u2019s ferry safety record is increasingly under scrutiny.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/travelweekly.com.au\/how-safe-are-indonesian-ferries-safety-body-warns-of-major-issues-days-before-disaster\/about:blank\" width=\"267\" height=\"476\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-rocket-lazyload=\"fitvidscompatible\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?height=476&amp;href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Freel%2F912186294982689%2F&amp;show_text=false&amp;width=267&amp;t=0\"><\/iframe><noscript><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?height=476&amp;href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Freel%2F912186294982689%2F&amp;show_text=false&amp;width=267&amp;t=0\" width=\"267\" height=\"476\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/noscript><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Safety body raised concerns days earlier<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Indonesia\u2019s National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) raised a series of concerns about ferry safety just days before the latest disaster.<\/p>\n<p>On 9 September, KNKT published findings from more than two decades of investigations into passenger Ro-Ro ferries.<\/p>\n<p>The body recorded 46 Ro-Ro accidents in Indonesian waters between 2003 and August 2026, including 19 fires since 2014.<\/p>\n<p>KNKT identified problems with hazardous cargo, overloaded vehicles and manifests \u2013 the official records showing the passengers, crew and cargo on board a vessel.<\/p>\n<p>The safety body said shippers often failed to declare dangerous cargo. Cargo records also lacked detail, while operators did not always physically inspect goods after packing.<\/p>\n<p>KNKT called for tighter cargo controls, more accurate passenger records, better firefighting training and stronger safety checks before vessels leave port.<\/p>\n<p>It published the findings just four days before the Virgo Transport 8 capsized.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities have not linked the issues KNKT identified to the latest disaster.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Australians caught up in previous ferry fire<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Australians have already been caught up in a recent Indonesian ferry disaster.<\/p>\n<p>Two Australians were among the survivors when the KMP Putri Yasmin caught fire while travelling between Bali and Lombok on 12 August.<\/p>\n<p><iframe height=\"314\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p>One person died and rescuers evacuated more than 200 people after the fire broke out in the Lombok Strait.<\/p>\n<p>The incident also highlighted concerns around passenger manifests.<\/p>\n<p>Initial records listed 114 passengers and 17 crew on board, but authorities ultimately rescued far more people from the vessel.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Smartraveller warns Australians<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The Australian Government already warns travellers about the risks of ferry travel in with international safety and maintenance standards.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAustralians have been seriously injured or died at popular tourist beaches or in marine transport incidents,\u201d the advice says.<\/p>\n<p>Smartraveller also warns of rough seas and strong currents around Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>The latest disaster comes as authorities continue search and rescue operations for those missing
