Owens<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>        <!-- content --><\/p>\n<p>The gray, early morning drizzle <a href=\"https:\/\/thedialog.org\/tag\/sept-11\/\">may as well have been brilliant sunshine Sept. 11<\/a> as more than 400 students were bursting with energy and enthusiasm outdoors at the campus of Holy Cross parish and elementary school.<\/p>\n<p>Law enforcement people riding bicycles across the state of Delaware streamed through the parish property on State Street as kids lined up in the school yard, waving flags, banners and signs to recognize those in public service, paying respects on the 25<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the 9\/11 terrorist attacks on the United States.<\/p>\n<p>None of the youngsters were alive in 2001 when terrorist hijackers weaponized commercial airliners, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/live-blog\/9-11-attacks-memorial-ceremony-nyc-trump-mamdani-live-updates-rcna597049\">plunging two into the World Trade Center twin towers in New York, another into the Pentagon building in Washington and one other that was hijacked before terrorists encountered a band of passengers who tried to reclaim control of the plane<\/a> before crashing in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. Nearly 3,000 people were killed that day.<\/p>\n<div class=\"td-a-rec td-a-rec-id-content_inline  tdi_2 td_block_template_1\">\n<div class=\"a-single a-844\"><a class=\"gofollow\" data-track=\"ODQ0LDAsNjA=\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ursuline.org\/admissions\/visit\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thedialog.nyc3.digitaloceanspaces.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/09090233\/Ursuline.Fall26-Dialog-Ad-800x100px.png\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"a-single a-826\"><a class=\"gofollow\" data-track=\"ODI2LDAsNjA=\" href=\"https:\/\/stophb140.com\/\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thedialog.nyc3.digitaloceanspaces.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/08092138\/HB.140.LB_.1.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cLaw enforcement and first responders thank you ride\u201d \u2013 an event held in Delaware each year \u2013 attracted about 200 bike riders who ride to pay tribute to those who work to put the well-being of others before themselves.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<hr\/>\n<p>After the ride-through, Principal Mallory O\u2019Mara-Tunell led students, faculty and staff into church for a prayer service that included the school choir and remarks by Father John Enemuo, parochial vicar at the parish.<\/p>\n<p>The gathering included Kassi Dunphy of Newark, sister of slain Delaware State Police Cpl. Ty Snook, a Saint Mark\u2019s High School graduate, who was killed in the line of duty Dec. 23. Dunphy was there to cheer on the bikers riding in honor of her brother.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo see Holy Cross honor my brother like this, it means a lot,\u201d she said as the large group awaited the arrival of the bike caravan. \u201cWe\u2019ve been to a lot of events that have been very hard. This event is bittersweet to see the kids having a good time honoring my brother \u2026 is probably the happiest event so far. It means a lot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel like it\u2019s still very new to me. It\u2019s not much easier any day, it\u2019s kind of harder each day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Father Enemuo reminded people to remember the importance of love.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere there is love, there is God,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd we pray that brings to rest the souls of those who lost their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A group of school choir members agreed that it\u2019s difficult to understand the impact of Sept. 11, 2001, in the same way as those who lived through it and remember first-hand.<\/p>\n<p>Isla Garrison, a seventh-grader at Holy Cross, said she didn\u2019t know a lot about 9\/11 before the event at school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew obviously of the twin towers crash and a bunch of brave people went in and did all they can to help,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Jordyn Matticks is an eighth-grader who also knew about the towers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew it was a very emotional day for a lot of people and that the towers fell,\u201d she said. She paid especially close attention to the bike riders visiting her school since her mom, a first responder, was among them.<\/p>\n<p>Sophia Clark, another eighth-grader, said she has done research on it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI learned it was a very emotional day. More than 2,000 people died. It happened in more than one state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her classmate, Shane Moss, said he knew 9\/11 was a \u201ca very tragic day. People were just in a state of terror. I felt very grateful to honor the officers and the fallen people and those who do God\u2019s work.
